AH! What beautiful photography in BW! I love the nice contrasts + the graphic shapes of this "foldable structure". I also noticed the light rays "radiating" out from the lightspots on the tip of the big poles...saying aperture was fairly closed down...cool impact.

I would purchase the 24-120 f4
Nano coated lens over the 28-300

Have you taken the weight of this lens (800 g.) into account? They call this a “convenience lens,” but IMHO it is far too heavy for any kind of casual photography. I bought one (used), tried it “walking around,” sold it. I’ll carry a heavier lens for birding, but not for everyday. If the 300mm is important, the AF-P 70-300 is lighter and very highly rated.

Right. Mine was bundled at negative $$. It would have cost extra to refuse it !

And altho I have no problems with image quality, it’s size and weight of does limit its usefulness. So I usually tend to ignore my verrrry versatile free lens and carry something less burdensome despite a narrower range, something that I really paid actual $$ for !

The 28–300’s IQ is far better than the poor impression you’ll get around here. Consider the source ! It’s mainly its size that makes it a wallflower.

The 28-300 is a really fine lens. I sold mine to a HH and he was ecstatic with the quality of images. I am not using mirrorless and had no further need for the lens.
You only asked if $799 was too much and the simple answer is YES! A used lens is worth between $500 and $600.
You can also check the fb page for nikon used gear buy and sell along with this site. Good luck.

If I didn't get the 24-120 f4 lens with my D750, I'd have gotten the 28-300. Ken Rockwell gives it a great review and those photos in his review have no sharpness issues at all.

KR assesses lenses by real world use. Such results are often at odds with quantitative or “lab” testing. I anyone needs a lens to participate in competitive numeric geek trials, they will get no useful advice from KR.

He is generally dismissive of things like corner sharpness and other edge effects, claiming that he shoots only three dimensional subjects and does not place anything important in the corners.

If you shoot test targets, or brick walls head-on, KR is NOT a suitable advisor for such pursuits. OTOH, few real world user reviews are even half as thorough as his. For user reviews in general, I highly value KR’s reviews because he produces web pages rather than yoo toob performances.

I read through all the posts in response to your original inquiry. I am amazed no one mentioned one of the really great features of this lens. I have mentioned it before and will here again. This lens close focuses to about 11" at all focal lengths. On your 7200 this would be the equivalent of shooting at 450mm from a foot away! With this feature, it eliminates the need for a macro lens in the field. It won't have the same edge to edge sharpness that a macro lens has so would be limited for use as a copy lens for documents etc., but in the field for flowers and insects it works great. I know of no other long zoon that will do that.

Boone I think that you said it well. For some, such as your self, the lens works well. For others it does not do well. When I bought my D850 I got the 28 to 300 lens; but, I found it soft on my d850 and returned it. I suspect that the manufacturing tolerances end up not being good enough. I suggest that if one buys the lens that it be tested to verify that it is sharp

Not quite. On a D7200 it would be the equivalent 200mm at a foot away. (You said you’ve read all the posts.) Acoarst one foot away at 200mm is still really impressive, and even useful !

My rough calculation says you could digitize/copy a slide with that (hardly ideal flat copy optics however).

Not trying to be difficult; but, would someone post a couple of shots taken with the 28 to 300. I may have sent back a lens I should have kept.

"...Do you own or have you used this lens. Are you speaking from experience?" sheldon while I can't speak for Gene here I can validate his inferences... It has a place in my "Kit" albeit for work at the long end the AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Nikkor 694 grams (w/ NC Filter) is a superior Prosumer lens which replaces it.

Yes the AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Nikkor 809 grams (w/ NC Filter) typically can get the job done... I've used it on commercial gigs where there were too many variables to deal with. But as Gene noted, it's limitations are somewhat a challenge. Where does this lens shine? From ~ 70-140mm between f/8 to f/11 (from experience)... There it truly delivers, albeit again as Gene noted focus breathing is an issue, just move closer...

Below are examples of the AF-S 28-300mm and the AF-P 70-300mm... You decide.
Yes I'm I keeping my AF-S 28-300mm. And yes it has a place in my kit... but it's not a "go-to" by any means.

To the OP (hippi), the AF-S 28-300mm is a heavy optic that you'll not be hanging around your neck for long.
It's sort of a Swiss Army Knife but the trade-offs are considerable.
After you've used high end Pro-Level Glass you'll likely realize that convenience may or may not be worth the trade-off, only your experience with this Swiss Army Knife can let you decide.

Hope this helps sheldon and hippi
