Not really. I believe $799 is pretty much the high end of average. Shop around, you will find a better price.
Why do you want a Nikkor 28-300 lens? Many people here at UHH have few nice things to say about that lens. I personally have no problems with it. I own both a Nikkor and Canon 28-300 lens. The Canon is a bit more lens and 3 times as expensive as the Nikkor but, in my opinion, it's a nice utility lens for when you need a wide range of focal lengths and can only bring one lens. It's not the sharpest but it does get the job done.

I have had the 28~300 Nikkor for several years. I find it to be very sharp.

Thaz just weird. Adorama lists a Nikon USA refurb for $50 LESS than that.

Not a bad lens, and useful, but not a favorite of mine. Though I can't recall seeing it proven, there are purportedly good and bad copies of lenses. At the worst, mine would be Middlin".

The Nikon sticker price is shocking but I’ve never heard of anyone paying full fare. Mine was a kit lens with a D610. Very affordable as bundled. No regrets. Not my daily schlepp but there when I need it, and it’s 100% compatible with my new “Z” so it’s still a keeper.

quixdraw, mine is, obviously, the only one I've used/checked. It has worked extremely well through the range of focal lengths.

High price for a less than average lens. But it depends on what body you intend to use it with. It works ok with crop sensor cameras and older 12-18 mp full frame. But it has lots of flaws - some correctible others not. Worst case is corner and edge sharpness - not correctible. It has a lot of CA (chromatic aberration) - correctible, coma - not correctible, poor performance beyond 150, severe focus breathing (at 300mm and near its minimum focus distance it provides an angle of view equivalent to a 130mm lens, bokeh is anything but smooth - there are few reasons to love this lens on a high mp camera - which most people buy because they are in search of excellent image quality.
So, if you can get it cheaper, or just get something else - almost every other lens in the Nikon lineup offers better image quality, so there are lots of choices, but none have the convenience of the zoom range. For my needs, that is too much of a tradeoff.

Have you taken the weight of this lens (800 g.) into account? They call this a “convenience lens,” but IMHO it is far too heavy for any kind of casual photography. I bought one (used), tried it “walking around,” sold it. I’ll carry a heavier lens for birding, but not for everyday. If the 300mm is important, the AF-P 70-300 is lighter and very highly rated.

If I didn't get the 24-120 f4 lens with my D750, I'd have gotten the 28-300. Ken Rockwell gives it a great review and those photos in his review have no sharpness issues at all.
