Allow me to disagree. I have both and plan to keep the 5D. Why? It is an excellent camera, I already paid for it and living up north when temperatures will soon fall well below 0, its battery will easily outperform the R5’s battery.

I'm also in this very same decision-making process and these websites are very good tools to use.
I will more than likely retain the 5DIV as a backup and for "Iffy" situations.
That and my current "L" glass are easily adaptable.
Thanks for posting Jerry.

As an owner of both, I find that my use of the Mark IV has dropped to almost zero, as the R5 allows you to do more in the way of bird or wildlife tracking, high resolution landscape photos, and a higher dynamic range. I sold the MKIV and bought the 100-500mm zoom. I will keep my EF lenses. If I need a backup camera for a special event, I can always rent one. The alternative is to purchase the R6, which is virtually as capable as the R5.

I would love to have a 5D mark IV if anyone wants to make me a good deal on one? Haha

My 5D IV was getting to the count was to the point it might be living on borrowed time and went to a 5R with the D as back up. The cameras seemed about e quill but began to realize I have been getting away with hand held shots in HDR. The stability seems better.

Boy o boy the GAS is flowing freely. But then the people at Canon have to eat too.

I have the 5D IV and am planning to upgrade to the R5 before the end of the year. I am also planning to try the 24-240 as my main walk around lens, but will keep my 24-105L and compare the two. I also have the 16-35L and the 70-300L and will keep those as well. My reasoning for switching is because 1. Canon has indicated they will no longer develop EF lenses in the future. Probably not a huge problem as there is a lot of EF glass available now, but still, a consideration. 2. I like the increase in megapixels from 30 to 45. I'm not really a pixel peeper, but I do crop a lot, especially if I'm shooting things like whales, bears, etc; I'll take all the extra detail I can get. 3. The in body IS in conjunction with the IS built into my EF lenses should allow hand holding at slower shutter speeds. I have tripods, but I do not take them when I'm traveling. 4. The focusing system is far superior especially with the eye tracking for both people and animals. 5. The money I receive for the Mk IV will go towards new RF glass. 6. I always take a small Canon point and shoot with me as a backup so I don't really need it for that. The Mk IV is a great camera and I've been perfectly happy with it, but I think mirrorless is the wave of the future so I'm going to start converting while my Mk IV still has value. I already have one of the original 5D's that I paid over $2k for that is now worth about $150!

I have a 5D3 and the R5. I kept the 5D3 as a backup for client photoshoots. The problem is that I also have to carry along my old EF lenses - so it's not just carrying an extra body.
I decided to sell the 5D3 and all my EF lenses (except the 100-400) and get a second R5 body.

You will really want the 100-500. Lighter, shorter, further reach, and no RF adaptor necessary.

Thanks Scubadoc - have you tried this lens? Does it work with a 1.4X adapter?

I rented it while on Safari last August, and it was superb. Even my Sony buddies didn’t want to give it back to me. I ordered it from BandH last July, and it just shipped yesterday. Yes, it will accept the 1.4 adaptor, but you can not adjust the focal length lower than about 320mm because of the configuration of the back element.

I had the same dilemma. I purchased the R5 and have been ecstatic about the result. Between the ability to focus on the eye, the higher frame rate, the lower noise at higher ISO's and the in camera ibis system that works in conjunction with the in lens image stabilization, I have increased the percentage of keepers for my bird in flight photos. There are other features that also get high use such as focus bracketing.

I am upgrading my kit to include some of the RF lenses, which seem truly better than their EF counterparts. For example, when I got my RF 100-500, I wanted to see how much quality I lost in comparison to my EF 500 f4L lens version 1, which was one of my favorite lenses and which had been cleaned by Canon. So I tested it against the 100-500 at 500mm. As I was very pleased with the 500's sharpness prior to the test, I was surprised when the new zoom out performed the prime by a slight bit. Although the 500 still had the advantage of being a much faster lens, I opted of the much lighter and more versatile zoom. The fact that the zoom was a tad sharper at 500mm than the prime was a game changer.

If you are pushing against the limits of your camera and you are financially able, then why not.

If you carry a second body as a "backup", it should be the same as the primary.

I have both of these cameras, and I have loved the results of both, although I must say, as I learn more and more about the R5 it seems (because of the pixel count) the clarity I get is stunning. The question I have for those of you much more experience and knowledgeable than I is, is there a good case for holding onto both bodies or should I go with my original plan and sell the 5D IV (since I’ve already sunk the money into the 5D a few years ago, I’m not too concerned about the money at this point) I shoot with all EF lenses: 16-35, 24-70, 70-200, 90 TS-E, and RF 24-105. I have an adapter for all EF lenses.

I consider myself a relatively unrefined amateur. I just enjoy the daylights out of reviewing and working with the photos I take.

I’m just looking for a variety of thoughts on the matter.

If you want to get rid of the 5DIV then do so.
As you know already using the RF mount with EF lenses is seamless and NO loss no matter how old the lens is.
Not sure why you want to sell the 5DIV but that is your decision and will not affect your ability to fully utilize all your lenses to their full capacity as designed.
