Probably the Z9. It seems to offer some capabilities not present the DSLR lineup. I particularly like the non-optical FTZ adapter, that offers IBIS AND a tripod socket. And even with the adapter, it is cheaper than the D6, which is now a year and a half older tech. I don't see any downside here.

Problem there is the old adaptor with the tripod mount doesn't fit the Z9--the battery grip gets in the way. I may be wrong, but I don't think the FTZ2 has the tripod mount.

Regardless, if I was still stuck in Nikon World and had to choose, Z9 hands down.

We photographers have a tendency to be conservative and I for sure can be counted as one of them. We are watching on a yearly basis how mirrorless is taking over. At first professionals refused the idea of using these cameras but eventually mirrorless took over and today a large group of professionals are using mirrorless cameras. Remember when cameras came with an exposure meter built in? I was one of the many photographers that did not accept the idea. At the time I was using a Sekonic C&S hand held exposure meter. Eventually I bought a camera with the meter built in and after learning how to use it I became a happy camper. Today it is almost impossible to find a 35 mm camera without a built in exposure meter.

Technology has changed how we photograph. Mirrorless cameras are convenient and offer more advanced technologies than those built in dSLR bodies. I am always amazed at the powerful technologies built into the Olympus cameras and I can say they help me a lot in many cases, night photography and using Live Composite is one of them. It is very nice to watch the exposure in the rear monitor as the camera will expose. Modern firmwares can correct vignettes and wide angle distortions, something we could not do in the past. AF has been a godsend, especially for action and wildlife photographers. After Minolta introduced AF, I believe in the early 80's, I was not comfortable with it till I learned how to use it. AF has saved more than one of my images.

I am not familiar with the Z9 but all reports I have read have been very enthusiastic about the new camera.
We photographers have a tendency to be conservativ... (show quote)

We see things very differently. The last major advancement was the F5 in 1996 imo. It introduced a camera with fast autofocus, excellent metering and fast fps. Since then how far have we really come? We built up the megapixels and tweaked autofocus. You got some crazy fps for those who want it. Difference between the F5 and Z9? The Z9 is a little more foolproof.

Now people will get angry.

Money no object you say, both D6 & Z9.

It's sad but the D6 will soon be keeping company to all museum gear like the F3. The real question is what comes after the Z9? The iphone 14?

D6 - no interest in adapters or an additional type of lens mount. Fact of the matter is neither, quite satisfied with current gear and it will do what I ask of it very nicely.

QD...he asked you to pick one, not *none*! ;0)

I made the hypothetical choice of the D6, without perceived need, simply refuse to act.

I have sold both of my D6’s and my Z7II in anticipation of the Z9. Shipped the first D6 yesterday. I think (hope) I made the right decision. If all goes well, will then sell my D850. Big leap.

The problem in this scenario is that you could be waiting a long time for that Z9. I hope you pre-ordered it.

Z9 without a doubt. That said, I was using my D5 last nite in pretty bad stadium lighting at 20,000 ISO with my trusty, old and heavy 200-400 f4...what a great camera/lens combo. I'm absolutely positive the Z9 will supercede this performance; and that's what I'm after.

Agreed Robert, it's a big leap (of faith?). Wish you well.

If the Z9 has the same or better high ISO capabilities as the D5/D6, then I am very interested in the Z9. Next is that it will have to be as good or better in AF speed. Those are the two criteria that make me interested in the Z9. The Z9 is the first body in a while that has me interested. I don't like that the reported battery isn't very high (I get 3000+ with my D5).

Jury is still out, but I think the Z9 could be in my future before a D6. The D6 doesn't seem to provide enough over the D5, and the Z9 may not either, but I like what I see about the Z9.

...yup, you *did* say that. My bad. As an owner of a well-used D5 (couldn't see moving up, the improvement is/was miniscule to me) my commitment to action/sports is what guides my choice(s). But *this* body, with the huge sensor, changes the game in that I can do virtually *everything* my other bodies provide, with one camera. 'Nuff said.
