Want 10,000K followers on IG? Then the latest and greatest high end offering is indeed germane...
I did a lot of makeup gigs for a Wedding Shooter who was represented by a "Photographer Agency" in our market. They actually told him that he need to move up to a D4 from his then D700 for them to continue referring high end clients to him. Yep this actually happened. Not fiction, but brutal reality.

In the immortal words of Robert Zimmerman... "It's either fortune of fame, you much choose one or the other though neither are to be what they claim..." Sometimes fame comes with a high price tag.

Besides I found it a lot easier to get Hot "Agency Chicks" to do testing gigs when I had a $7K camera... lol
Yes I'm still shooting that Nikon D3x *(it's 13 years old and still going strong)* and paid for itself long ago.

And you DJ750? Or is that JD750? You shooting a camera that actually paid for itself many times over?
Just a thought... like the fox said, "sour grapes"

Aesop Fable: "The Fox and the Grapes" where the grapes hangs from a vine, just out of the fox' s reach.
So all you "Foxes" out there suck it in... If you can't run with the big dogs stay on the porch.

Or do you really care? Remember, "The things you own may in fact end up owning you"
a.k.a. "Identity Investment" The social animal believes that their self-worth is found in the things they own, really?

btw, I have clients... no need to impress anymore only to furnish up "Deliverables" now.
Back to testing my kit... Have a great day all! Cheers!

It’s JD750. No I’m not exhibiting sour grapes behavior. I can afford new expensive gear. I said “given what I shoot, I don't see how that will improve my photography”.

I’m not criticizing anyone who wants new gear. It wasn’t meant to be an attack. Just an observation.

Perhaps I should have said “herd behavior in the community” maybe it sounds better that way.

But your comment about the client wanting to see the latest gear just goes along with herd mentality does it not? In this case it’s the client.

Me? Mostly I shoot with my OM-D these days because it’s small and unobtrusive. Nobody notices it in a crowd or out on the street.

I think it's a case of how much does your photography really need improving over the joy of photography.

If I buy the latest and greatest, I may get a shot or two every now and again I couldn't before. But it doesn't really mean anything. I can afford to miss that shot as I'm doing this for my own personal enjoyment.

The day I don't need to worry about exposure, focus, I can point and shoot, then crop 90% of the image away and finally process my image taking bits from 6 other images, I am done with this hobby.

That's what this hobby has effectively come too with modern tech. I don't care about missing a shot every now and again. I care about the pure enjoyment of photography being removed.

The camera I have the desire to shoot with the most atm is actually a fully manual film SLR and that's what I am going to go out and shoot with next. I might come back with an out of focus image, a missed action shot or a poorly exposed frame but I know I will have the time of my life dealing with the limitations and disasters!

Some people are never quite satisfied with their photography and assume the latest camera model is the magic solution. But it rarely ever is, and soon enough they are craving the next new model.

I bought an R6. Had a D6 that just felt way too big and I felt clumsy using it. So hardly ever used it. The R6 is similar in size to my way old Canon FTB and just feels better. Gave the D6 to my son. Didnt splurge on the lenses tho. 50, new 16 and 24-230 or whatever that is. I did keep the 100-400 and bought an adapter. They're all as good or better than I can see anyhow. Now to study the book and actually learn how to use the camera.

Compared to digital, think how stable and predictable things were with film.
Now, with digital, the possibilities are seemingly endless, as well as desires and expectations.

Interesting........

Seems like the satisfaction goal is infinite now, on the steep slope of the asymptote.

I celebrate that I have the possibility to acquire a Z9 outfit. As to happiness, my happiness has absolutely nothing to do with hardware, old or new.

Moo! Where do I sign up for the next stampede? I've learned one precious lesson after being alive so long... it's a lot cheaper to be last in line (usually), so used and refurb make it possible for me to live in a time warp and I just tell myself that my 'new' D7100 is the hottest thing going right now. I treat current offerings like visions of the future. Getting $1500 cameras that have hardly been used for $500 makes me smile. I have 'past herd' mentality. I buy what used to be the latest and greatest and don't seem to notice the difference. DW calls me a cheap old ba$tard... I prefer the term frugal.

That's pretty much me as well although I did spring for a D850 this year. Looking back I might ought to have gotten a D800 or D810.

I guess it's good for manufacturers when people to buy the latest gear.

Quite honestly I could afford the latest gear but given what I shoot, I don't see how that will improve my photography. I know some people will gain from the latest greatest features, and that is good, but I'm not one of them. So I'll just sit back and enjoy the show.

It's nothing but the basic human behavior that has been part of us for thousands of years. I am sure that looking back through history there was always a group or groups of people procuring and using the latest "things" to use in whatever endeavor they were involved in e.g. the best spear, bow, chariot, auto, electricity, etc.

And like many human attributes, there are good sides, it fuels the drive to make our existence better in some way. Sure it fuels excesses when we purchase things we really do not need, but it also motivates innovation and improvement.

I have been involved in numerous hobbies and sports activities over the years and in every one of them, there are the ones that want the latest and greatest item. While many of us cannot afford the latest and best gear, those that do and purchase these items help pay for the advancements which in the long run helps us all.

Many of the items we see as necessary and vital for our everyday existence today was new and expensive at some point and maybe considered as a luxury or purchased by an early adopter.

Yesterday, while shooting a cross country race in some soggy, muddy, slippery-with-newly-fallen-colored-leaves woods west of Rochester, my 2014 technology Nikon D750 took a few out-of-focus photos, as the runners swept past left to right. Fortunately, at a "blazing" 8 fps, I have many more very sharp keepers of every member of my school's team members than I know what to do with. I'd get a headache if I had to go through 2 or 3 (or 15!) x, more, so, yeah, no need to upgrade, (spend more) on the latest that comes down the pike.
