Don't get sucked in to this. A friend of mine lost $2000 in a similar scam. Was suppose to take delivery in a town 75 miles away. Supposed dealer was a "no show". When called, he asked for more money to complete the deal. Would not refund her original deposit.

Has anyone had success with purchasing a puppy online? I’ve read some warnings, and am trying to get the breeder to provide more information for a Western Union payment. They first wanted to use Zelle, but my bank doesn’t have that option. Apple Pay was another option, but I can’t get it to work. “Recipient Cannot receive at this time” message returned. Suggested PayPal, but they didn’t have a PP account. Will not accept Credit Cards. They would accept prepaid gift cards from CVS or Walgreens. Choosing not to do that per Scam warning about using PP cards.

Warning signs are flashing, yet I really want that pup. Any thoughts on what I can do to verify the legitimacy of this breeder?

The forms of payments they want are one of the biggest tip-offs that these are scammers.
Why? because the kind of payments they want are untraceable and no way to get your money back.
A legitimate breeder should be able to accept PP or credit cards.
You even said yourself, the warning signs are flashing!
No matter how bad you want this pup, I don't think you are going to get it from these people!

I’ve been checking the Pound regularly for puppies. Hard to find. Also checking Rescue sites as well. I would like to get a particular breed which is why I’m exploring online.

Find a local breeder and visit first.

So many Red Flags.
No credit card acceptance, wanting gift cards, it is very likely this is a scram. We went through this when we were looking for a new puppy a year ago. There was one in Houston, about 4 hours drive from me that was a great price, cute etc. They offered to fly him here for a small upcharge, we didn't want to have him go through the trama of flying. So we told them through email (no phone calls were allowed) that we would come to pick up the puppy and bring cash. They would not do that, we insisted. I told them I have a friend that lived in Houston that would come that day to see they puppy... They never answered again.
We ended up purchasing from a local breeder and are very happy we did. Call the vets in your area, they can tell you who are the good breeders.
Best of luck to you. Here's a picture of our little pup

This is a scam! Zelle offers you zero protection. I thought it was safe because my bank promotes it (SURPRISE - Zelle is partly owned by Bank of America!). I "purchased" something with Zelle which never showed up. The bank was zero help. They "took a report". Anyone can use credit cards or Paypal these days - the fact that these people will only accept Zelle or gift cards means that they want to stay untraceable! RUN AWAY!

Scrap the puppy mill and get a rescue. There are thousands that need homes.

I spent over a year looking in every possible corner for a good candidate. I met breeders who were very difficult with whom to work. I also met breeders who were the opposite and easy to get to know. Breeders are like every other type of business people. I do not like surprises, especially in daily business matters. In matters of business I hold honesty as the chief characteristic. If a person cannot be held to their word I erase them and move on. In mid-April I got a call from out of the blue from a breeder of goldens. We had conversed and she knew of me and my search. 2 weeks later I picked up an 8 week old golden retriever! He is the best dog I have ever had. He was a cash-only purchase, also a first for me. Acquiring a pet is not to be taken lightly. If cheapness is your middle name buy a photograph of a dog a let the world be a better place. However, if a pet is important to you then do your homework. You are not buying hot TVs from Honest Charlie out of a pick-up truck in some secluded mall parking lot. Consider how important this is and plan accordingly. Sorry for the duplicate but he is good enough to show twice. Heeeerrre's NICKY!

Absolutely. When you hear the words "prepaid cards", forget it. You're either dealing with a thief or a moron, or both. Reputable merchants take credit cards, period.

Scam, go to the pound and rescue one.

Best place to get a pet by far! You will for sure fall in love with a wonderful pup at an animal shelter.

Why anyone would want to spend $hundreds on a pure bred or worse, designer breed, when there are plenty of loving, lovable, and grateful animals eager for adoption at animal shelters is beyond my understanding.

Tell them you want to pick up the puppy in person and see how they react.

Your best bet is to go to a breeder in person. You need to see the conditions in which it was born and is living. You also need to see and verify the parents and their health. And for certain breeds, medical tests must be made for hereditary diseases and potential problems. I would never purchase a dog online without taking these precautions. Good luck.
