Not sure what city.... How many cities in the US refer to themselves as "the Queen City" I wonder. Bangor, Maine also calls itself "the Queen City". Nicknames must be generated by the local Chamber of Commerce. Orlando calls itself "the City Beautiful" - that decision must have come from folks who don't travel much.

The classic nickname "Queen City" is taken from an 1819 newspaper article (the city was founded in 1788 by former officers of George Washington's Continental Army). The Queen reference was further immortalized by the 1854 poem "Catawba Wine" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:

And this Song of the Vine,
This greeting of mine,
The winds and the birds shall deliver,
To the Queen of the West,
In her garlands dressed,
On the banks of the Beautiful River.

Cincinnati was on the western frontier of the country for decades in the early history of the United States. It was the 6th most populous city in the country from 1840 until 1860, now down to #64 in 2021.

That would make a spectacular panorama print!

Nicknamed the Queen City, Charlotte, NC, and its resident County of Mecklenburg, are both named in honor of Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the queen consort of British King George III during the time of the city's founding in 1768. The County of Mecklenburg is often called "The Hornets Nest," because British General Cornwallis found the locals to be a "hornets nest of resistance" during the Revolutionary War. Hence came the name of the Charlotte Hornets.

Cincinnati came along in 1802 (as a town) and 1819 (as a city). A journalist in the local paper called it "The Queen of the West." The term stuck, and morphed into Queen City over time. In 1854, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote his poem, Catawba Wine, the last stanza of which contains the same reference.

So there is some controversy over the use of the term "Queen City." So far as I can tell, there's no monopoly on it, however.

Cincinnati was nicknamed "Porkopolis" for many years, due to the meat packing and distribution industry there. Chicago eventually took over claim to that moniker...

I never knew there were so many Queen Cities.
Thanks for the education.
I've heard it referred to "Porkopolis" and they have the famous "Flying Pig" marathon every year.
Doris Day was from Cincinnati as well as Charlie Manson.
Thanks for the nice comments!

Nice night shot of City, the reflection off the water adds to the composition of the image.
