Greetings:

I have had my credit card numbers stolen three (3) times in the last 4 years. As a result I am looking to cut down on the number of places that have my card on file such as Adobe. Adobe does not have any other method of payment... as I asked. So, the question is: What is the next best editing software that sells their product outright and is good as Lightroom/Photoshop?

I don't know where my card numbers were stolen from. I just want to cut down the number of places that have them on file and I am NOT accusing Adobe of mishandling my card numbers. I just need to know if there is an alternate to having my credit card on file, having it stolen, then sold on the internet as has happened to me.

I am not looking forward to changing from Lightroom/Photoshop as I have well over 20 years invested in their products, but if that is the only way to keep my credit card off companies systems, so be it.

Been using Adobe CC since 2013 and so far have no issues. You can limit exposure by using PayPal for payments, but my experience has been 100% positive.

Perhaps a good VPN is what you need...not one of those free ones, most of those aren't worth the time of day.

Re: a VPN -- one which is free, and EXCELLENT, is Windscribe. I have been using it most successfully for three years!!!

With regard to the OP's question, I would second the PayPal suggestion -- though -- any time you buy on line with a credit card you are giving them the information needed to charge the card; it just might be a little easier for someone to get to it if it has been stored; one place for a number of accounts to be found. If you really worry about card info theft, you might maintain a special account for such purchases, wherein you keep only a minimum amount, so as to minimize the loss if theft did occur. Also - theft can occur off-line probably more easily than on-line, anywhere they take your card out of your sight for a minute!

It was a much better program in the days before Corel took over Jasc Software, as solidly built as a tank; Corel immediately (and continually since) began adding function after function, attempting to be all things to all users, and the brings things like slower load and response times, and so on.

However, for the money, you really cannot beat Paint Shop Pro. It's a one-time fee for less than $100, and it does have a ridiculous number of functions that Photoshop doesn't, and its workflow space is so similar you'll be running top-speed all over the place in no time.

Corel tries to get you to buy a new version every handful of months, by adding new functionality, or additional app that ties in and so on - but generally speaking, waiting for a few versions to go by before reinvesting is a wise move. PSP also plays well with a LOT of plug-ins and assorted apps.

Of course you could do what many folks do, and remain with an OLD Photoshop version (I still utilize CS4 myself).

I've had PaintShopPro since it was Jasc, and subsequent versions up to the last couple. I always considered it good software, but now finally settled (after testing and using MANY programs, including Adobe), on ON1, which I believe to be the best available, easy to use, best file management, with LOTS of good tutorials, and at a very favorable one-time price. The only prior shortcoming was in noise handling, but recent changes have made it at least as good as anything available anywhere else, and better than just about all others. You can go as AI as you want, or completely manual. A fully functional trial is available, so give it a look.

A lot of people would be VERY pleased if Adobe sold a perpetual licence Elements version of Lightroom that had all of the PP tools but less in the way of DAM and other bells and whistles. $120 PA is the equivalent of paying for a new version every year. I for one have been putting off going down that road.

PS It's poor form if you can't pay your Adobe subscription fee through PayPal.

I suggest you give Affinity Photo a try. $50 or less with specials and updates to date (Since 2015) have been sent at no charge. It is a raster editor and does not provide cataloging in their package.

I would get a separate credit card just for online subscriptions etc. I keep a separate low level card for just that purpose.

Ref alternatives. I use Paintshop Pro (2022). Try the free download. I have some sort of a fringe dyslexic issue and I get on with it easier than many others. I also have AFFINITY, and I get better results with it - but I find it so difficult to get along with, that first choice is always Paintshop Pro. AFFINITY, for me, is for projects. I will add that there are a few people in our club who swear by it though, and keep telling me it'll get easier if I stick with it. Hasn't happened yet!

How does PayPal prevent access to the source of funds by an unauthorized other?

Get a credit card with only a $200 limit specifically to only use for Adobe so you don’t have to worry as much about theft. You can also buy a prepaid credit card and only load the amount of money you want on it. Or as others have mentioned, use PayPal.

This may not suit you, but Amazon sells Adobe subscriptions. Amazon allows you to use a checking account as a payment method with your routing number and account number. This is no more info than printed on every check you write. No credit card needed. You can sign up for monthly at $9.99 with monthly billing or the annual plan at $118.88. I have used the monthly for over two years now. They send you an e-mail about 7 days before renewal date to inform you it will renew on such and such a date. You can cancel at any time. I personally have the Amazon Visa card so I get 5% rewards every month on all Amazon purchases. This would allow you to continue your 20+ years experience with the product. You might have to search a little to find the $9.99 plan, but I verified it is there today. In description, it says "Existing subscribers must first complete current membership term before linking new subscription term." Hope this helps. Dave

Take a look at Capture One plus Affinity Photo. Both have free trial periods.
Capture One to replace LR (yet do much more) and AP to replace PS.
