This lens has a great reputation but MTshooters example photos are really soft.

If you change your mind let me know. I also have the D850. Its a great camera although it may be a bit of a dinosaur give the advances and new found popularity of the new mirrorless cameras.

Popularity is a reason to buy? What can you do with a mirrorless you can't do with a D850?

With Sony - Eye tracking and 30 fps for Birds - which is a focus for me in my photography and travels. With a 2nd injury to my other shoulder in August, Im done waiting out Nikon. Probably the biggest factor is the Sony 600mm weighs half of what the Nikon one does. Yes, I know the rumor is Nikon will get the Z9 to market along with a host of lens by the end of next year....maybe. This is my bucket list life as I inch (ok, fly) towards 65 next year. Despite my daily efforts to remain fit enough to travel with this type of gear, my body has made it clear it's time for a change. In support of Nikon, the D850 is my most fav. camera - ever. And it is excruciatingly painful to part with it. For now, I have decided to keep it and the 500mm. I am not sure when the Sony 600mm will be available. Availability is an issue for all but at least Sony is available and shipping. Aging Sucks!

I think it is a smart move to keep an older reliable system while you change over to a newer and better system. As I grew up to full frame with Sony, I still keep my Olympus OMD-e-m-5 ll and lenses, which I feel more comfortable taking on wet clammy trips, and also to some arenas that prohibit "professional cameras" because I can get away saying it is a point and shoot! So you probably will still use your older kit as you get used to the newer technology. Enjoy and hope your shoulder feels better!

Yep the eye tracking of the Sony (ie. the alpha 1) is the best at the moment. Hopefully Nikon (with the Z9) can get close to matching it. However it will be interesting to see how they handle the roll-out, in particular, how fast they can fill all the orders. And hopefully no major bugs in the camera.
But the Sony 600mm f/4 at 6.7 pounds still is a very substantial weight to carry, more like 80% of Nikon's newest 600mm f/4 and more than twice Nikon's 500mm f/5.6. And how long is the wait time these days for the Sony 600mm f/4?
And good luck filling your bucket list! Seems like from your Flickr site you are well on the way to fulfilling it. Though, speaking from my experience, the list keeps growing as you get older and certain trips become undoable as one ages.

The bird eye focus is now on the new Sony A7 IV, just introduced today.

Pretty amazing to see how fast this technology has moved to this much lower priced ($2,500) model (6 months if I calculated correctly). One does lose the ability to shoot 30fps and 40% of the megapixels, but assuming it focusses as well as the a1, definitely a reasonable option if one wanted to switch to Sony.
