Being active doesn't mean someone would have six cameras, twenty lenses, five flashes, .......
One can be active with one camera, one lens, on-camera flash, and a $35 tripod, maybe a filter.

So what do you do if you forget to recharge your battery and you're on the way out to a shoot? And what are you going to do when your battery's recharge capacity and it's tability to hold a charge starts to diminish? I'd hate to find out the hard way when I'm out shooting that my battery no longer has the ability to meet my needs.

That's why you carry a spare. Or two.

Generally I don't carry a spare battery, unless I'm on a trip that lasts 3 days or more. But unlike some people, I don't take hundreds or even thousands of photos a day. A few dozen at most. And burst mode I rarely do.

Photography is for fun to me. Believe me when I do my job which isn't photography I have backup on the backup. But part of the fun of photography for me is to see that my equipment functioning as I expected. When my camera failed it doesn't matter if I have 1000 cameras in hand I am no longer in the mood to do anything but to see why my camera doesn't do as I expected. Same thing with the battery. If it dies unexpected i would be looking to get new one rather than taking pictures if you would lend me your battery.

A few years ago with my D500 on continuous high and preview recording raw on a 64 card and jpg on a 32 card battery would last 1200-1500 shots then change cards and battery. (always spare cards and batteries in my pocket). Only took 18 months to rack up 180,000 clicks but sold enough photos to buy another D500

I was reading all the replies to the post "camera on or off " . And it seems everyone carries a spare battery when out shooting . How many pictures do you guys shoot to use up a battery ??
I know every camera is different but on a big day, I've shot close to 500 pics and still had plenty of battery life left with both my Nikon D5100 and my D7200. I've never needed to use a spare battery. Just curious .

I don't keep track, I just change the battery when it's showing low charge!!!
I always carry extra batteries for my camera. And cordless tools when working away from the house or shop

Due to my relationship with electronic devices, I have always carried spare batteries. I've never needed them but one never knows. These include batteries for my Nikon F, Sekonic light meter, viewfinders for my Hasselblad and backs, etc.

I don't shoot that intensely that I need a spare battery. Of course, if I'm traveling or shooting an event, I'll bring extras. Ordinarily, the battery lasts long enough. I've never kept track of the number of shots I've gotten on a battery.

I am 77-years old and have been in photography since I was 8. I have earned my living as a professional photographer for well over 50 years and I am still working. Yet there is something I can not understand. So will someone please advise me?

Y'all spend many thousands of dollars on digital cameras, battery-operated flash gear, exposure meters, remote triggers, radio/slave flash systems- all electronically powered and all requiring batteries. If the battery unexpectedly dies in your camera or any of these other aforementioned accessories, the whole thing shuts down! So, why do so many folks fuss about the cost of batteries, worry about the differential in cost of OEM vs. 3rd party models and be hesitant about carrying a few extra batteries for all this gear?

When you consider the investment in the equipment, the cost, time, and effort that photographers of every ilk spend in going out, working hard, and shooting whatever they shoot, money spent on travel and vacations where picture making is part of the plan or the importance of family events you want to record for posterity, they cost a few extra batteries in comparison, is a pittance. How's that for a run-on sentence? If you are mathematically inclined- do the percentages!

Some of this battery bickering defies common sense!

I can write all about ampere/hours, charging rates, battery types and characteristics, and all manner of electronic technobabble, but after over a half-century of using batteries of many kinds I can tell you that even a brand new fully charged OEM battery can unceremoniously drop dead at the most inopportune times.

"Who needs a stinking spare battery.." can join the ranks of many famous last words. Well, nobodies gonna die but there can be some serious frustration and disappointment!
I am 77-years old and have been in photography sin... (show quote)

I concur 100%, E.L.!
Battery life depends on the use of the rear screen, chimping, and fiddling with the settings, and then trying them out.
Starting out the day I always use the battery that is in the camera if it has at least 1/3 charge left. I also carry a fresh "Brand Name" battery as a backup.
The same goes for my flash. I also use the flash (Eneloop) batteries until the recycle time does not support my shooting, and this has never happened.
Like E. L. says "Some of this battery bickering defies common sense!" So get out there and shoot. Also, don't forget to . . . .

Part of it is with the vendor..Nikon has had at least 2 newer versions of their EN-EL-15 battery..I believe current version is "B" In looking at the battery, the mAh has been increased. Lastly in addition to what others have mentioned, overall temperature has an effect on a battery.
