Had a similar issue when my Z7ii was new. I eventually realized that the eye piece (eye cup) was getting slightly moved as I put the camera in and out of my camera bag. Upon inspection, I saw that a very slight nudge would misalign the eyepiece causing auto switching problems. I replaced the original Nikon eyepiece with a 3rd party one I found on Amazon for $14. That was 6 months ago, haven't had a problem since.

My sister and I returned from Tanzania where all 3 of our Nikon Z’s had failure of LED screen. Between us we had a Z6, a Z6ii and a Z7ii.
After 48 hrs travel home and a good camera cleaning I’m happy to report return of function…for all 3.
Anyone know if this occurred from overheating, dusty roads in the Crater, or some other cause?

I just watched a very short video on the issue. Basically it showed what was repeated here. One thing mentioned that I didn't think of, she said it only happens if the camera is set to automatically switch between rear screen and viewfinder. You can switch from one to the other by pressing a button. On my Z6 it is on the "prism housing" (I'm not sure what it's called today). On the Z50 it's on top of the body next to the housing.

One of those things I knew, then completely forgot.

Are you sure it wasn't just the eye sensor on the viewfinder getting dirty? That has happened to me a couple of times and the rear LCD stops until the sensor is cleaned.

This happens to me a lot. Usually blowing a hard breath into the viewfinder solves the problem.

OMG no FAILURE of anything read manual, button next to viewfinder can fix.

Thank you all! It’s a relief to know it’s cause and that our cameras are fine, need no service.

The button changes mode, but it doesn't fix the auto switching from rear screen to viewfinder. As a number of others have mentioned, that requires cleaning the sensor above the eye piece.

My point was the button can get you an image after the "nikon failure" but before the sensor gets cleaned.

IMHO, this problem and simple fix deserves more attention. My wife’s Z6 was driving both of us crazy last week until I tracked it down on Google. So easy.

What was the problem? Dirt covering the eye sensor?

Yes as Bill said turn OFF auto switching to eliminate the problem.

That is merely a bandaid fix. Clean the eye piece (viewfinder) sensor so that if clogged or blocked it does not think that there is an eyeball looking thru it. You can brush it off or merely blow on it.

I’m don’t consider the auto-switching to be a useful function on the Z. It might be if it worked, it does work on my OM-D, and I use it there. But on the Z it’s a buggy feature I can do without.

Its purpose is to preserve battery life. If it wasn't there some people would bitch. Carry a spare battery, leave it off and don't worry about it.

Although I have only had it a short time I love the feature on the Z fc where you can turn the screen around against the camera back. Then the back of the camera looks and feels like the back of a camera.

Turning the LCD OFF saves even more battery.

You are right about some people complaining if it wasn’t there.

That’s a useful feature my M43 cameras have all had that feature since circa 2005. I flip the screen in unless I am using the LCD for a low or high shot.

The M43 screens also flip out sideways, and rotate and they will rotate forward too. It’s makes the LCD useful.

Glad to see Nikon is adding that. it only took them 16 years! But the Z6/7 don’t have that.
