Having just incurred substantial damage to a lens when my camera strap slipped off my shoulder, causing the lens to hit the ground, I am considering alternative, more secure ways to carry my cameras. Neck straps and sling straps allow the camera to swing and move uncontrollably.

What do you think about a holster that straps around the waist? Any experience or thoughts?

When shooting that does not involve any use of tripod I wear 'Dual Camera Harness Carrying Chest Vest System'. https://www.ebay.com/itm/274820145336?hash=item3ffc8ea0b8:g:7dwAAOSw~IZhV2Z1

I bought mine roughly 10 years ago off of ebay and it works great. As a chiropractor I can vouch that the vest wonderfully removes stress from neck and upper back and therefore very ergonomic especially if big or heavy lens on the camera. If camera dropped accidentally the strap prevents it from hitting the ground. Very inexpensive too and it lasts! Also makes me feel safe from camera theft when traveling in a foreign country. Best bang for the buck in my opinion.

I have been using a Spider belt and holster for over 6 years and am very happy with it. There is no weight around my neck and a sense of security around my waist.

That’s great if you don’t need to use your hand for anything else. Often my hikes involve trekking poles so this wouldn’t work. Just wearing my regular Peak Designs Slide strap cross body works well.

Everyone has different needs, I just gave him another idea, which is what he asked for. I use my monopod as a walking aid in my left hand and carry the camera in my right. The only time I don't use it is with my 100 - 400 lens, a bit too much weight, then I attach the lens to the monopod and have it handy and ready to shoot.

i have been using the Peak Design lite strap as a sling and the clutch on camera to hold while walking. Sling doesn't slip and very easy to hold the clutch - usually with Canon 80d and Tamron 18-400. Well priced and the Peak Design is an interchangeable system.

I use an Op Tech sling. Works for me

A Peak Design strap in the wide model is comfortable and can be worn in different ways and carry heavy loads safely. Watch the YouTube videos before buying.

A Black Rapid or any other sling slap is a good way to go. Can't fall off your shoulder and doesn't hang around your neck -- less weight around the neck is good. I use mostly for large lens.

No straps for me, for the last few years, I have been using the promediagear SH1, which is in my opinion, a better version of the spider holster.
I wear two sh1’s on my belt, everyday.
Sometimes I carry my 70-200 fl-e on one side, using the peak design capture lens, with a round headed “pin”, so it clips into the sh1 and a D850 or d810 on the other side.
And battery packs too!
This weekend I shot a big wedding with cameras on either side, both with large lenses, and even larger flashes on promediagear boomerang brackets!!!
These are photos I took on Saturday of the two cameras hanging on my belt!

Think about OpTech harness. Takes the pressure off your neck and distributes the weight between both shoulders and back evenly. Does not use the tripod mount to connect if that makes a difference to you. Your camera will not ever fall off your shoulder again. However it will still swing but not uncontrollably.

There must be some substance to my query. It has generated 8 pages of discussion.

Well aren’t you special! This kind of question is a big part of what this forum is about. A lot of people have responded with decent suggestions. What’s your problem?

Photographer at a niece’s wedding was using a Spider Holster https://spiderholster.com/. Bought one but realistically it’s best for shorter lenses- certainly good for a wedding shoot. But my family disown me when I wear it.
