hi, my canon takes an LP-E8 battery. what is a good brand battery that is less money then the canon battery? B&H shows the canon battery to be discontinued.
thanks

I use Watson batteries as a backup but prefer OEM considering what I’ve spent on camera equipment.

LP-E8 was superseded by the LP-E8N in 2014 although the LP-E8 was still available for sale. That new battery will work in all the cameras that previously were sold with the LP-E8. It's got a little bit more juice in it. I believe it was first introduced when the power hungry Canon 7D Mark II, which I own, was released in fall of 2014. The Canon version of the LP-E8N and 3rd party versions should still be available.

This is incorrect. It is mixing up LP-E6-series batteries with LP-E8 battery.

Original poster is seeking an LP-E8 battery, such as was used in Rebel T2i/EOS 550D, T3i/600D, T4i/650D and T5i/700D. Canon has discontinued the LP-E8. I would just recommend buyingthe Watson LP-E8 that B&H and others offer. There are also other brands selling LP-E8 clones, but I don't know anything about them. Watson has a good reputation and cost less than the original Canon batteries, though Watson may be a little more expensive than some of the other clones.

The above response is about the LP-E6/E6N, which is an entirely different battery incompatible with Rebel-series/xxxD/xxxxD cameras.

The LP-E6/E6N is used in the 7D Mark II (also all 5D since the II, all 6D, 60D, 70D, 80D, 90D and EOS R mirrorless, but not in the RP).

I have a dozen LP-E6 and E6N for use in my cameras, including a pair of 7D Mark II. BTW, I easily get 2500 to 3000 shots with two LP-E6N in a battery grip on my 7DIIs... so around 1200 to 1500 shots per battery.... and even then the battery isn't fully discharged. I just use some reasonable power saving techniques (camera sleep mode set to the minimum... auto image playback turned off... rear LCD screen used sparingly to access menu and review images).

In fact, an LP-E6N"H" with even higher capacity was introduced a year ago alongside and is used by the EOS R6 and R5. The "H" battery is now the only version available from Canon and costs more than the previous versions, but is backward compatible for use in any of the models that use LP-E6 or LP-E6N.The R6 and R5 both also can use the older LP-E6/E6N, but will have reduced frame rates and fewer total shots.

I've never had a problem with aftermarket batteries. If you're looking for a brand, Wasabi seems to be popular. There is a small number of company making batteries, and they put different brand names on them.

And an even smaller number of companies that make the battery cores then sell them to the ones that assemble batteries.
Wasabi Power used to make a point of saying they always use "Japanese made battery cores.".

Personally, and nothing against anyone with a varying opinion, I would never put any battery in my Canon camera other than a Canon battery. There is just some money that I don’t want to save. I tried an aftermarket battery once, but never again. In the end, I purchased a $37.50 battery cover while also putting a lithium battery in a landfill and polluting our earth.
