I don’t know about you but it exceedingly rare for me to see a dslr in use anymore. It is not disturbing nor even surprising I guess, just fact.

Having traveled by car for the last two months from the west coast of Florida to popular photo locations in PA, MA, VT, NH, NY, and Maine, I saw exactly THREE dslrs in use, one Sony, one Nikon, and one Canon.

I used an IPhone 12 Pro to record most of the people, things and places I wanted to remember, and a Canon 80D with a 100-400 to get shots impossible with the IPhone. It was just a matter of convenience. As much as I love the Canon, carrying it around all the time and using it was just inconvenient and unnecessary.

Here are a few examples. I’m not claiming that they are technically great, and maybe it is just my eye, but I can’t tell the difference between the two. Can you?

They're a quite fabulous quartet

Your loss. I argued for a long time that I didn't need or want one. Now I wouldn't be without one. Just the safety aspect - being able to communicate in times of need - makes it worthwhile.

And it has maps, photo Ephemeris, messaging, grocery list(s), weather reports, tides, email, ...
Lots of handy-dandy stuff.

I don’t care what anybody else uses for photography be it a cellphone or a Hasselblad or something in between. If they are happy with their results why shouldn’t I be happy for them. I don’t take photos because I want or need anybody to tell me how wonderful my pictures are or what a great photographer I am. I do photography for the enjoyment of it. Part of that enjoyment comes from using Manual Exposure and Manual Focus, which I do quite often. I don’t do much PP, mostly just straightening and cropping. Compliments are nice and fuzzy feeling, but that is not my motivation. Being pleased and satisfied with what I take and the knowledge that I achieved it using my own abilities and not a bunch of computer programs is what keeps me going.

What I am more surprise is that you saw a Sony DSLR. Perhaps you saw one of their DSLT instead?

Not a blessing, mindset, training, and preparation. Will work or not.

WOW! Where is that covered bridge located? I use my full frame DSLR for such shots so as I can make extra large prints without sacrificing image quality. Not sure what limitations smart phones have as far as enlarging images without any degradation to the image.

I think he is using dslr as a name for interchangeable lens cameras in general to include mirrorless. Sony used to make dslr cameras and there are probably some out there being used by people who have had them a long time and know them well.
Sort of like the old saying "Beware the man with only one gun." Why because he knows that gun and is an expert at getting the most out of it.

The guy who knows photography with a 10 year old camera that he bought new and has used regularly knows how to get it to produce the best it can.

I suspect the first and the last are from your iPhone with the middle two from the Canon. Probably wrong but never mind - they're all very good.

Phones don't have mirrors...

When they are turned off, they become a black mirror. Very useful for artists to see the value structure of their subjects. Before smartphones, Artists would paint one side of a small piece of the picture glass black. The black mirror goes back quite a while.

You don't get to see the 'problems' with phone photo's until you enlarge them. I like all of these. But a double download on no.1 will show how the in phone processing has really mussed up the grass and it's done the same on no.3 with the tree detail in top left. Minor details.

95% of the time they're more than O.K., for the other 5% you can always go back.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The camera is but a tool to capture the moment. I will hopefully be going ro Germany with my 2 sons in two weeks and although I love my 850, this time I will be taking my cell and a Sony point and shoot which also has a viewfinder. One of my bigest hangups with a cell is shooting when the sun is behind you and you can't see the image ln the screen.

Apparently your experiences are the absolute opposite of mine. If I could never take a photo again except with a phone, I would be finished with photography. On a societal level phones are yin and yang, equal parts of good and bad. At a nice Restaurant the other night, two middle aged adults obviously on a date, were playing with their phones. Anodyne I do not require, I prefer life.

Great photos! I still use my three Nikon DLSR's and have no intention of replacing them.
