The current Photoshop (22.5) has a new "neural filter" called "colorize". The OP didn't allow a download, so I tried a screen copy with the Snipping tool. Once saved to a JPEG, Photoshop spent about 20 seconds on it. There were some strange reflections on the Cadillac hood that the Clone Stamp tool fixed.

That's a good start.

I’m not a fan of colorized pictures. Sharpen image, work on lighting/contrast and leave B&W as B&W. I’m kind of old fashioned 😉.

I agree.

Thanks for the compliment. The original post had the word "automatic" in it. My goal was exactly that. With work, there could be a good finish too!

Unfortunately, the OP wants "automatic" in the software already owned.

I have tried the store original but it doesn't show that way. I'll try again.

It is a two step thing. You have to check the box AND press Add Attachment.

I've done just that but doesn't seem to work.

There are topics here to explain how to do it. I can't do any better with what you are posting than I did with the first one.

There was a post last week about this same subject. One of the replies mention a program call Pixbim. I tried it on their free trial and liked it so much I purchased it. Not expensive, $39 and I contacted their customer service several time with questions and receive a prompt response. I'm not at all good with computers and they gave simple advice. I have used it on people and landscape B&Ws and was very impressed. It is easy to use and and you can easily change any color in the scene. I even remade colorized photos of some that I had done back in the 80's with oil tinting and was in some ways more pleased with the results than what I did back then. I was a pretty good oil tinter in those days making many come back customers. If you want to try it the web is https://pixbim.com.

I have Photoshop Elements 13 is there a plug in to automatically convert the image to color. I do have NIK, or are there online free programs to do this.

Why ruin a perfectly good b&w real photography with a fake image.

I've tried to use Photoshop to color B&W photos, but haven't had much luck with it. Piximperfect on youtube has a great tutorial on how to do it. I haven't tried it for a photo like yours, but I imagine it can be quite involved. May I suggest "Codijy"? you can find all the info at Codijy.com along with a lot of great examples and tutorials, plus you can download it for a trial run. I'm still learning, but it works great, support is superb and there is a great community out there on Facebook more than willing to help out.

I just tried this for the first time. This image is from summer, 1973, kids in a park in Greenville, SC. Original is on Tri-X film, copied with my macro copy setup to a raw file. I converted the B&W original to 16-bit TIFF, then ran the neural filter in Photoshop. I also include a JPEG of the initial conversion.

I did absolutely nothing to the converted image. If you look closely, you'll see that it isn't perfect. There is still much to be done in Photoshop. But the filter has LOTS of promise! View the downloads full screen.

https://photomyne.com/colorize-app

The above link is to an easy colorization app, however, the is an additional process.

First, I go to my favourite post-processing software and restore shadow detail, low contrast and make adjustments to prepare the image for colorization.

After colorization, I go back to Photoshop and increase saturation in trees, grass, etc,

The last stop is sky replacement. In this case, it cover-up dust in that area.

Altogether, this is about 15-minutes of work, quick and not too dirty. If you want to spend more time, you can do some selective dodging and burning and clone out scratches and other surface defects.

Old family pictures are worth the effort!
