Thankful your input but it doesn't address my question about the L-plate.

Thanks everybody for the valuable feedback. I don't usually follow Amazon's customer ratings but there seems to be a general problem of poor fitting with the lower price units as well as the Pro Media products. There are certainly positive reports about the RSS and Kirk plates which are steering me in that direction. Thanks again.

R.R.S is great but you are paying for that high labor and high taxes in California .

I've used a Sunway for several years with my D850. I tend to use the"L"as a hand grip. Not expensive and never a problem.

Actually, RRS moved from CA several years ago for exactly those reasons. I think they went to UT.

Hi Julian,

I use the 'iShoot' plates. I have 3 of them and they are used nearly all of the time. Multi adjustable with excellent construction. Come with the appropriate Allen key for solid adjustments. Key securely affixes to the plate so you always know just where it is. I used Amazon.

Good luck,

Terry

Take a look at the Sirui TY-D850L L-bracket for the Nikon D850. I have the Sirui TY-D500L L-bracket for my Nikon D500. It has a pin that sticks up and goes into the battery grip pin hole on the bottom of the camera. It's very secure that way. It's very well designed.

Really Right Stuff and Kirk are the premium brands. For years I only bought RRS. I bought one from Kirk when RRS was out of stock. Last year I bought a couple of imports and found the fit and finish 'appears to be' equal to the higher priced ones.

RRS or Kirk. Both make great L plates. Just make sure it has any special features you might need.

I do not have a Nikon 850, however I do have a Fuji X-T2 with extended battery grip and a Nikon Z6 both camera have Kirk L brackets. I had a Nikon 610 it also had a Kirk L bracket. the Kirk L brackets fit like a glove. I have a good friend that has a RRS L bracket on his Nikon 850. For the money the Kirk L brackets are just as robust and fit as well as the RRS L brackets.

Those RRS and Kirk products are great. The $19 L bracket from eBay that I have on my Z7 also seems to work just fine.

Honestly, how much difference can there be between different brands of L-brackets? They all do essentially the same thing.

First things first.... are you using the D850 with or without the MB-D18 battery grip? This is important. All the following are for the camera alone, without the grip. If using the grip, these won't work. With a grip on the camera you'll need a different bracket.

B&H Photo and/or Adorama:

- Really Right Stuff BD850-L SET (2-piece).... $180
- Photo Clam 1-piece LB850... $180
- Photo Clam 2-piece LB850SE... $148
- Kirk Photo BL-D850.... $145
- Really Right Stuff Ultralite BD850-L (1-piece)... $140
- ProMediaGear PLND850... $130
- Sirui TYD850L... $88 ($108 minus $20 mail-in rebate)
- SmallRig #2232... currently out of stock @ B&H (was $69?)
- Sunwayfoto PNL-D850... $50
- Field Optics FL-850... $30

There are also several on eBay for $24-$30, new and used. There are higher priced ones there, too.

So, how much do you want to spend? Aside from some of the above being 1-piece and others being a 2-piece design, I don't see much difference aside from the brand name and the prices.

I was recently looking for a camera plate for a small mirrorless and couldn't find one I liked at what I considered a reasonable price (very few choices and the cheapest was $50). I ended up getting an L-bracket instead... A brand I've never heard of (Fittest), via eBay, for all of $16 including shipping from China. It took about a week to arrive. But I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality. It fits perfectly, doesn't interfere with accessing anything on the camera and even is a 2-piece design, with a couple screws that can be removed to use just the base as a more compact camera plate. I don't generally like L-brackets for the bulk they add... But in this case the camera is so small that I actually appreciate it.

The 'iShoot' plate did not come up on my search engine. I will certainly investigate. Thanks
