What is the best stand al one software? I do not need to catalog or do any heavy duty editing of photos. The Photoshop Elements that I had will no longer work and says it had to be updated. I know what that means- buy a monthly subscription to it. I do not do enough editing for that.

I am not a heavyweight photo editor myself, and with that being said, I chose Affinity Photo($49). Easy to use, and relatively cheap.

Affinity Photo is cheaper than PSE, and is a full blown editor just like PSE, and just as easy (or hard) to use. It's stand alone software, and unlike PSE, upgrades are free. It's got to be one of the best deals out there, other than free stuff, like Gimp. The good thing about full blown editors is that you can't outgrow them. Even if you choose not to learn all the features, you can if /when you want to. Other than that, if you really want a good editor for cheap, that is somewhat limited in scope, get and learn to use FastStone, it is not FULL featured, but does a lot, and is totally free.

When you do, skip all offers to buy things. Adobe offers add ons that might be fun for some. For basic photo editing, none of those are necessary.

Ok- thanks

If you don't have need for heavy duty processing, Adobe Photoshop Express is an excellent choice, It's free, and essentially has no learning curve. Give it a try!

Thank you for agreeing with me!

I've not been to Baguio for too many decades!

It's price just went up to $55, was $50.

Also, it just came off sale where you could have had it for just $24 over the past month or two. I paid $50 a couple years ago and couldn't be happier. I've been editing photo's for well over 20 years with everything from Grafx to PS itself, and Affinity is on top of the pile when it comes to bang for the buck, and very close to the top in just plain bang...

I read the reviews on the 2021 Elements and I think that I will pas on it. The good reviews were not the best.

I have no reason to read the reviews. What’s “not the best” about it ? I’m still using PSE 3.0 and it’s quite surely “not the best” (15 yrs old). But it has never damaged a file, runs well on my Win8 laptop, and has a decent set of tools.

What do you expect for pocket money ? Creative Suite ? That will clear up any “not the best” issues but acoarst there’s no $60 stand alone version.

You stated up front that you do only minor editing, so “the best” isn’t worth the learning curve even if it were free !

Get the PSE, if not based on value per dollar then based on very widespread common use. Since you are clearly OK with crowd sourced advice, use a very commonly used editor so that you will have a very large group of fellow users for help when you need it.

Probably deliberate, If they made it too good a product more would use it...they can't have that. Forcing you to up-grade to a subscription of sorts is what they want.

Your camera brand may provide free editing software. Nikon does and I think Canon does too, others may do so, so check their websites.

If you don't need cataloging or heavy duty editing, then try Fasttone Viewer. It is free, and the companion program, Batch Resizer is super.

Thumbs up all the way. Magnificent program and free. However I donated to the owner $20. Edits raw too. You cannot go wrong. You will love it with time.

I should add that I shoot with Sony A6000 and a Canon 7D - mostly the Sony.

Doesn’t Sony have an editing software that is free? I know that Nikon and Canon each provide their own editing software.

Don't laugh, but I downloaded Picasa 3 from Google years ago and I continue to use it now. It isn't very sexy, but for my use, it is perfect. You have to understand that Google does not update it, but the cost is right, free. Good luck.

Try Paint Shop Pro from Corel, works for me!

Yes, PSP is a good price and modern software with new AI built-in. PSP is my go-to software for editing. If PSE, then worth adding Elements Plus for $12 to open many PS doors otherwise closed to PSE owners.

If you have been using Elements and are somewhat familiar with it, just go out and purchase the newest version. Elements is still purchased and not subject to the monthly rental.

Elements is a single version-no monthly. When the version you purchased and it getting to old than Adobe offers a special discount like in your case. Look in to your Adobe account and you can see how much it is. I believe it was around $20
