Thank you all for commenting. I think I might have not been clear as to why I even use the iPad to copy my photos onto. When I travel with my Canon system, every day I copy my photos onto the iPad. Then I use the SanDisk two sided device (lightning on one side, and USB on the other) and copy all the photos from the iPad onto the SanDisk. That is my backup, the SanDisk. USUALLY, I then delete all the photos from the iPad each day. This way, I don’t carry a computer around, and I have a backup for all my photos. I never use the cloud. It is not enabled. Maybe others of you do, but I do not. THIS ONE TIME, I decided to do some edits on the photos on the iPad, originally taken with the Canon 5Dii. It is not my imagination. The photos, once edited, are under 1 megabyte. The originals are 7 to 10 megabytes. So for some reason, it is not preposterous, as one of you thinks, but the editing on the iPad greatly reduced the file size of the photos. UNEDITED, the photos are original size. Once edited, they are greatly reduced in size. So far, I have not seen any reason for this. And once again, I am not at all interested in using the cloud for any purpose such as this. The one and only question is, why are the file sizes reduced when edited on the iPad. Thanks again for reading this, and I’m sorry if I was not clear from the outset. JimR

The Photos app settings has an option called “Optimize iPad Storage”, so it may lower the file size. If you don’t have that checked, then you should be using “Download and keep originals” which preserves the file size.
It seems to me you are exporting the JPEG preview of the original file.
Read the article at https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921 to choose the right export option.
Take care

Hello Fellow UHHers. I typically save all my day’s photos onto my iPad when I’m away from home. This time, since i was away for a few days, I did some editing on the iPad, which has pretty capable tools on it. However, I noted when I then uploaded these edited photos into my computer, that the file size was much much smaller. Typically my photos are about 7 to 10 mb, but these photos edited on the iPad are less than 1 mb. Does anyone know why this is? Thank you! JimR

The actual file size of the photo will only appear on the original device that recorded the image. For example if photographed on the iPhone, the actual file size will reside on the phone as long as you have not checked “optimize iPhone storage” in iCloud photos settings.

I transferred a photo from my Canon to my iPad. I had previously set up the Cannon Connect utility to *not* compress the photo during transfer. It came over at 7.5 MB.

I edited it on the iPad. The file size was reduced by about the amount I cropped it (5:1) to end up at 1.6 MB.

I transferred it to a USB thumb drive. It stayed at 1.6 MB.

My earlier note stands: if you email the photo the mail program will compress the file automatically (and display the attachment size on screen), but that can be overridden with a gesture to transfer at full size.

If you can't get the same behavior you can contact me and I can give you the exact gestures I used to do the work.

Hello Talborough. Normally, I transfer the images from the camera (by wire) to the iPad as an intermediate step. SanDisk makes a product that has a lightning connector on one side, and usb on the other. I then transfer all my photos to the SanDisk. That becomes my backup. When I get home to a computer, I upload all my trip’s photos, multi days, to the computer. NO LOSS of image size or quality at all. But this one time, in order to share some photos while away, I did edit on the iPad. As one of you points out, perhaps once those photos are saved on the iPad after editing, and then exported from the iPad to the computer, something in the Apple software reduces the size. This happens only for the edited photos. Thanks again to all. JimR

I also use my iPad as short term camera storage when traveling. I use Lightroom instead of Photos for on the road editing of my camera photos and consequently use Adobe cloud instead of icloud to transfer camera photos to my home computer, so my workflow is not exactly the same as yours. I have never encountered the overcompression you are describing. My full resolution photos download to home computer from the cloud when I get home.

As someone has already noted, I wonder if you may have your icloud preferences for Photos set to "optimize icloud storage". I would suggest you uncheck that box and check "download and keep originals" instead. Let us know if this solves it or not.

Jim - on your iPad check in your Settings -> Photos -> scroll to the bottom and make sure “Keep Originals” is checked in the Transfer to Mac or PC section

Thank you minniev and ChrisKet. I just looked at my photos setting. At the bottom, I did have “keep originals” chosen. Also, all the slider switches above that, in the photos setting page, are slid to “off” so none of them is active. But as I say, I think somehow, the iPad program assumes I want to export to a cloud or send the file and is thus reducing the file size. The lesson learned for me is to never edit with the Apple software, as in about five years of my method of doing backups (onto the SanDisk stick using the iPad) never before have I seen this issue. Thanks again to all. JimR.

I routinely import the RAW files from my various cameras into LR mobile and edit them there. If I export edited jpegs to my camera roll they end up being larger than if I had captured jpegs in camera. The only time that’s not true is if I export smaller versions as recommended for photos to be shared on various social media platforms - those I typical export at 2000px on the long axis, resulting in files that are about 3MP - the file sizes there are usually around 2-3MB in size.

There are two places for the Keep Originals settings. One is in the Photos Ap settings. The other is in icloud settings that you access by clicking your name or icon on the top of the settings menu, then going down to the Photos subsection. Check both places. The key setting there is third from the top, and it's a blue check mark instead of a slider. It needs to be on Download and Keep Originals, not Optimize iPad storage. What you describe sounds like the Photos settings, not the ICloud settings.

It may, of course, be some new default setting that has dropped in via a recent Apple update (I hate that they want to think for us so much). The Apple user forums are a great place to sort out a difficulty like this. I have always been able to find someone that knows more than me about any issue over there!

All that said, if you have an Adobe subscription, the lightroom iPad ap is a good solution for edits and transfers.

Ok software changes and something has changed.

It seems to me that “never using it again” is like throwing out the baby with the bath water.

You have been using it 5 years now you will “never edit with it again” rather than finding out what had changed and how to work around it? You want to give up 5 years of experience over something you can fix?

Maybe you feel it’s time for a change and there is nothing wrong with that. Just be mindful if you switch, you are giving up 5 years of experience and starting a new learning curve.

Okay, Jim...I shoot Raw with a Nikon and follow a similar practice to yours when I'm traveling; I do not use iCloud for photo storage. I use the Photos app on the iPad to review the ones I want to edit, mark the few I've chosen as favorites, then bring them into Lightroom for editing. I export from LR as smaller jpeg files for social media stuff. This way, I keep my Adobe cloud storage to a minimum and retain the originals in Photos.

Just another thought...

Good luck!
~Chris

The problem is that the RAW images cannot be edited using the Photos app on the iPad. What you are actually editing is the jpg imbedded in the RAW image. To edit the RAW image you would need a 3rd party app. There are lots of details here https://thesweetsetup.com/using-ipad-photography-workflows/

So I first have a question. Which iPad are you using? and Are you using the simple program that is an included App? And, how do you transfer?
In my line of work I inspect loss damages. Shooting in JPEGs for Autos, Heavy Equipment, Structures, and whatever else needs an assessment. Then in RAW, I do Food and Product photography, Then Custom & Classic cars.
Aside from shots taken with my iPhone 12 Pro plus, I use two Sony’s a6600 & a7iii all photos on SD Cards are loaded into an iPad. JPEGs inspections go into my 10.5 iPad Pro. Apple photo App, and LR. Then all RAW into the 12.9 M1 pad, with Affinity, and LR.
So with all this said, I am not experiencing the condition you mention. One thing I do however, is always edit on a duplicate and upload originals to the computer, which now is a Mac M1 mini. I never upload from ‘cloud’, always moved to a drive, then transferred.
