Crashes of Telsa vehicles using their "Auto-Pilot' software have been in the news again lately and I am wondering how others feel about sharing our roads and highways with software driven vehicles. While I realize that the manufacturer says that the software is meant to reduce accidents and the percentage of crashes is still rather low, they are obviously not without errors. All in all, I find this "Auto-Pilot" trend to be a rather disturbing and I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the use of auto-pilot on our roads and highways at all. Sure human drivers make mistakes as well, but these computer driven vehicles can only do what they are programmed to do and I think it is impossible to write software that covers every possible scenario they may encounter. Anyway, is this really the wave of the future or is it possibly a misguided trend? Is the development of this kind of "Artificial Intelligence" really important enough to test it's use on our public roads and highways?

In any case, what are the laws that govern the use of this type of software and shouldn't we take a hard look at how we intend to proceed or not to proceed with this type of development before it goes much further? At least in my State, the operator of any motor vehicle must have a valid Operator's license, which requires at least some testing, etc. Do these computers have a license to operate in this manner or is just having a licensed operator on board enough to qualify, even if the licensed operator is paying no attention whatsoever? Frankly, there are enough technology distractions for drivers already and having auto-pilot available and by it's very nature and intent only encourages drivers to pay even less attention to the operation of their vehicle. I for one don't see how this is a good thing for all involved and I look forward to your responses on the subject. Good luck and good shooting to all.

How would you feel of seeing a semi truck going down the road without anyone in the cab? 😀

Human drivers make thousands of times more mistakes than the Tesla computers do. The software is still being developed and maybe it’s out a bit too soon but once it becomes ubiquitous we will all be much safer. Keep going Elon!

It’s not so much the cars/auto pilot but rather the “idiots” that operate them. They engage it and just sit and assume the car will take care of everything…..the operator takes no responsibility just goes about other things with his head up his ass….. do you think for one moment that a commercial airline pilot just assumes his aircraft will take care of it’s self whilst the A/P is engaged?……Hell no! He continually monitors what is happening within and without the flight environment. I own a three year old Tesla S and it’s the greatest auto I’ve ever owned..

George.

Many people don't seem to realize there are already autonomous cars and trucks out there on the road now with no backup drivers aboard. The whole future of commercial driving is no drivers.

I'm gratified to see you didn't include the older experienced drivers in you list of dangerous drivers. Thank you!

You haven't rode with my older, experienced wife. For that matter, you haven't ridden with me on a rainy night.
I let her drive at night and joke with her that I want her to drive to bring some excitement into my life...
YEWOW, that's no joke...
I don't think either of us will be around when fully autonomous cars are ubiquitous.

Self-driving vehicles are already better than a drunk or some idot on their phone. They will continue to get better too.

Some of the problems they have are due to erratic human behaviors, such as jay walkers in cities, etc.

Revisit this discussion is 2 years, then 5 and see what people say...

Interesting. Then more people will be able to get snockerd and their car will take them home.
At least maybe others may not get hurt in the process.

...heck no! WE are much safer! Haha...I've *really* noticed now that I drive a Prius. Personally I'm a MUCH better driver than even a decade ago...

The Tesla capability to self drive is hyped. It’s no where near ready. It’s pretty impressive and makes highway driving more comfortable. But it has its issues, for example you’ll find the car will mistake an exiting vehicle in the off ramp for a hazard and begin braking as if it was a problem. As for so called Full Self Driving (which Tesla wants you to spend an additional $10,000) it’s really a joke. What you get beside some promised future capability is an automatic routing navigation, auto lane changing and stop sign/stop light recognition. Oh and you can summon your car remotely in a parking lot, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. If you forget the hype though the ability to steer the car and maintain speed and following distance is still pretty great. IMHO.

I am not in favor of autonomous cars. I can't see them succeeding as long as we have fault insurance. In a driverless car who is at fault in an accident? The car owner, the manufacturer, the computer programmer, the government for the signage and controls of traffic. Too many open issues.

There is no such thing as laws; only lawyers.

The biggest problem with these auto pilot cars is the driver who has found another excuse for not paying attention.

Self driving vehicles out for public consumption should be a complete system in itself, not an introduced link in an already established ecology.
As a food for thought, who will be held responsible for accidents? Should we fine Tesla for every accident their car make? SHould we put the head programmer in jail if someone dies?

I have actually been pondering about this for years now and am trying to design a system that could make all these new technologies work together.
