Whatever kind or brand that is, it's more than I can afford.

NBC news reporters appear to be using Canon equipment. Any chance you could identify the lens?
To me it looks like a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM III or II with it's tripod collar removed (can't do that with the Sony 70-200mm... only it's foot is removeable). It also appears to be fitted to one of the R-series cameras via an adapter.
Funky, rubber, aftermarket lens hood... smaller than the OEM hood.... but the rubber hoods don't do anywhere near as good a job protecting the lens.
Chg_Canon is correct... .there should be a red ring visible on a Canon lens. I don't know why we don't see it here (they have been known to break and fall off some lens, though I've never heard of that occurring with any of the 70-200mm lenses).
Other than that missing red ring (maybe the photographer covered it?), it looks a lot like:

Right. Sony likes that color, too. It prevents overheating from those bright overhead fluorescent lights.
With Canon it is not just the color but the material coating that reduces heat transfer as well.
Others just paint to copy Canon but it is not the same material.
