I find dragonfly identification challenging, so please help.

If this is indeed a Blue Dasher, I would appreciate if one of you UHH dragon experts would explain the coloration (immature, female of species,???).

Bubba

Yes, this is a blue dasher female

Very nice capture. She looks like her aerodynamics have been a bit compromised.

Don’t know the species, but I do know there are no winged “immature”. These are insects, not birds !

IOW if it looks like a “proper” dragonfly then it’s fully an adult (same way with most insects).

Maybe that helps to narrow down your guesstimation options just a bit ?

According to Paulson and many other experts there are immature Dragonflies. For instance, the immature male Eastern Pondhawk looks like the female adult Eastern Pondhawk.

Yes everyone is correct in calling this a female Blue Dasher. They display sexual dimorphism. You can tell by the terminal appendages. The cerci are short spike like points. Immature males will look like this, turn blue and then somewhat pruinose. This is a fine shot showing all the field marks needed for proper ID. Well done.

Thanks to CHG_CANON, SteveHmeyer, randave2001, rob7789 and of course docshark for your authoritative references and comments regarding the ID. As with birds, easily identifying the female of species can be challenging so thanks for these inputs.

And thanks to everyone who made enthusiastic comments regarding the quality of the image.

I wonder what effect the missing portion of the wing has on it's flight?

It can only fly in circles.

This is an adult female Blue Dasher. They are found all over the country.
