I find dragonfly identification challenging, so please help.

If this is indeed a Blue Dasher, I would appreciate if one of you UHH dragon experts would explain the coloration (immature, female of species,???).

Don’t know the species, but I do know there are no winged “immature”. These are insects, not birds !

IOW if it looks like a “proper” dragonfly then it’s fully an adult (same way with most insects).

Maybe that helps to narrow down your guesstimation options just a bit ?

It's more likely a female blue dasher. Where you find your specimen always helps in narrowing the possibilities of identification.

Really like that it sits on iron and not a woody twig. A very real world element, not some “wildwood nature phantasy”. We all live in a common space.

Sorry. The location is North Padre Island, Texas on a canal near salt water. The perch is a rusted metal shepherd's hook for hanging hummingbird feeders.

Wonderfully detailed shot, including a big chunk of missing wing!

I wonder what effect the missing portion of the wing has on it's flight?

Thanks all.

I am going with female Blue Dasher, Pachydiplax longipennis. The hard part regarding the ID is the coloration of the female does not match the name.

Nicely captured. Looks like a female Blue Dasher to me, too. Doc will know if he checks in.
