Folks the overwhelming majority of imagery currently being shared today is generated by Cell Phones... My iPhone 12 is totally user friendly and certainly well up to the task of lifestyle reportage photography. Cells are ubiquitous and have changed the course of our current cultural awareness to a degree that the dinosaurs we here on UHH use could never in there widest dreams approach.

A single nine minute Cell video of George Floyd's last moments on earth sparked a revolution in awareness that has shaken the very pillars of our society and that of the entire World. No "Camera" image has ever had such profound consequences.

There is no torch to pass... that flame drown in a HUGE tsunami of cell phone Facebook and Instagram imagery.

Folks get off your computers and continue capturing life's wonderful moments...
This junior high school "Brand" bickering is so petty and juvenile... get a life!

btw, no one gives a rat's butt about Olympic still imagery... it's video folks that pays the bills in that paradigm...

Yeah I wouldn't know where would I go look at photos from the Olympic. I don't think I would buy a copy of Sport Illustrated. I would much rather trying to find way to stream 4K video or if possible better yet 8K video.

The reason the AP chose Sony is because at the time only they made a camera suitable for professional photojournalism that also excelled at video, (think mirrorless). They got a head start in the mirrorless game but by the end of this year all of the big three will be there.

You sure about that or is this pure speculation? I'd bet dollars to donuts the AP knew what the future held for the big three before investing untold thousands of dollars to replace all its Canon and Nikon gear with Sony. Such decisions are not made lightly. I'd even bet AP had closed-door talks with all three before making the move. I would have. The AP might even have solicited bids from all three. But whatever the AP's methods, I'm certain it had a good idea of what Canon and Nikon had in store.

It’s been in pretty much everything I’ve read on it. They made the switch a year ago. Even if they knew what was coming from Canon and Nikon, (which is still somewhat in the speculation stage at this point), they probably didn’t want to wait a year and half.

Your last paragraph may very well be true,, Thomas, but I for one, find that regrettable....

That's fine for them but, honestly, that doesn't influence my choices. Why do I shoot with a Nikon? I actually started with a Canon but it never felt comfortable - never really fit my hand. As a result, I almost gave up on photography. Then, I held a Nikon & it was love at first grip. I've no better reason than that :)

Sony lenses have the "G" on them. Black "G" for G lenses, and red "G" for G-Master lenses. And every Sony camera in use is mirrorless. And remember all Associated Press staff photographers worldwide use Sony gear exclusively. Photo by Don Roos.

Not impressed. I hear they pass out free cameras at the gate in order to get them to use them.

What torch? Passed to whom? What specific information leads you to these conclusions? Have you seen every venue at the Olympics? Do you have a press pass? Have you seen every photographer at the Olympics and what specific camera's they are using BESIDES just the image you have posted?

"Folks the overwhelming majority of imagery currently being shared today is generated by Cell Phones"
This would not be true for professional level photography. Show me the photographs that are being sold
commercially that are taken by cell phone. Few and far between. Not many wedding or events
photographers making money shooting on cell phones. Cell phone photography is similar to point and shoot
photography. Suitable for documenting, as you say, "lifestyle reportage photography", but not for
commercial use. Who do you know that is willing to pay $3000 to $5000 for wedding photography shot on a
cell phone?

"A single nine minute Cell video of George Floyd's last moments on earth sparked a revolution in awareness that has shaken the very pillars of our society and that of the entire World. No "Camera" image has ever had such profound consequences."
Not the same thing. Apples and Oranges.

"There is no torch to pass"
Because the topics are not the same.

"Folks get off your computers and continue capturing life's wonderful moments"
Says the person posting a lengthy response.

"This junior high school "Brand" bickering is so petty and juvenile... get a life!"
Surely you realize that in life someone is always claiming theirs is bigger.

"btw, no one gives a rat's butt about Olympic still imagery... it's video folks that pays the bills in that paradigm"
True, video is king, but that is as it should be. It is the imagery that provides the most information. But, to
say no one cares about still imagery is simply a falsehood. Agency would not spend so much money sending
photographers to Japan if no one cared. An example, show me a paper publication (newspaper, magazine)
that can display video. The visual imagery has, is, and until Harry Potter's world comes about, will be still.

There ... that's my two cents.

It might be still, but it is being seen online way ahead of print...

The best camera is the one you can't afford.

Semantics.
'Best' in context here is...bankable performance in what is essentially a pro shoot out event.

The shirt I am wearing right now is certainly not my best.
Just because I am wearing it doesn't make the shirt my best.
Even if it were my only shirt...the competition is not with MY other shirts (if any).
It's between a lot of other folks shirts.
Same with the pro shooters at the Olympics.
They want every edge they can get.

About half of what separates a successful photographer from their peers is who brought the best camera.
