Except for fringe sports there are no true amateurs at the Olympics. Most team sports use pro players, tennis pros play, even the top track and swimming performers are essentially pros. They all have endorsements, sponsorships and get appearance fees.

In this country yes however sponsorship and endorsement is not the same as being a professional in a field.
In my case with my Santa Claus portrayal I have a few corporate sponsors that purchase items and handout items for Santa Claus.
One of my sponsors actually purchased my 70-200 f2.8 lens for me.
The only thing I do for that company is I come in once a year for a few quick pictures for the company Christmas card.
They even pay my standard appearance fee for the visit.

His posts aren’t a spontaneous reaction to something that tickles his funny bone, but boilerplate comments, often off topic, that are repeated word for word over and over.

Yes it's humor. The repetition is the obnoxious part. Similar to when our Sony owner use to post the same Sony news in 4 or 5 places.

He has great photographic knowledge and experience and is willing to share them. Why the constant BS is beyond me....🤔

Some people really need to work on having a sense of humor, I almost always get a chuckle out of some CHG_CANON's comments. He regularly posts some excellent photos that, I think, anyone would be happy to call their own.

I don’t doubt his knowledge. It’s not what he presents, it’s how. I do not find insulting or condescending comments humorous. But then again, I don’t much care for the shows where, in the name of humor, people are roasted.

I’m sure he has much knowledge he can convey to others, but it is difficult to listen through all the sarcasm.

I once received a letter from Steven King where he equated his ignorance to satire. No Mr Kong, you are not fooling anyone.

Not the same thing. These “amateur” athletes entire income is based on their sport.

Wow, this post really brought out the trolls. I read comments only from the first page and was surprised to see some normally even-keeled members join in to help make an innocuous post something it's not. This post about gear used at the Olympics is an interesting observation -- nothing more, nothing less.

Brands seen is noteworthy because this year it's novel, and that's all. The post doesn't say one brand is better than any other, nor was that implied. Indeed, one reason for a different dominance in gear was even provided, that the AP now uses Sony gear exclusively.

Damn, I can't help it. I can troll with the best of 'em:

Those with a stick up their ass, or with fewer IQ points than a dirt clod, took this post to mean Nikon is an inferior, dying brand. While this is true (move over, Olympus, make room for one more), this was not implied by the OP. Neither was it implied that Sony makes the best gear, although this is also clearly the case.

As for the rest of you who posted troll-ish comments, you've wasted your time. Most hoggers, after reading the first page and seeing the trolls, will do as I did and move on. But I couldn't move on before joining in.

When I'm feeling ornery I can troll with the best of 'em.

If you think there's a serious discussion to be had when chest-thumping about brands or sensor size or mirrorless, then realize each and every boilerplate comment is there for you specifically. Glad you've enjoyed.

There is more to it than just an observation. It's interesting to the OP because it's what he wanted. He wanted Sony (yes Sony and not Canon) to be the most popular cameras among pros. That is why he listed Sony first. Of course he can't deny the popularity of the Canon. He also wanted the mirrorless to be the pro sport camera so he said all the Sony are mirrorless. Of course they are as Sony didn't make a DSLR for a long time. I see the the resentments from the other members.

I doubt many Nikon users will be disturbed. Nikon users have become accustomed to other brand users being so insecure in their camera choices that they need to inflate their brand while demeaning Nikon, just so they can feel good about themselves.

I must be too old. I will buy Canon only if it's the only brand left on the planet. Sorry.

You and others are reading way too much into the initial post. A lot of "pole-vaulting over mouse turds" going on here....😕

A blurry shot from pro photographer Don Roos who is in Tokyo covering the Olympics. At least at this venue, there were far more Sony and Canon cameras and lenses in use than Nikon or other brands. So what? Sony lenses have the "G" on them. Black "G" for G lenses, and red "G" for G-Master lenses. Again, so what? And every Sony camera in use is mirrorless. Again, so what, they don't take any better photos than any of my Nikon full frame bodies or pro lenses, sure I've used Canon and Sony and they are also good. And remember all Associated Press staff photographers worldwide use Sony gear exclusively. Photo by Don Roos.

Why should I remember that all AP chimps use a certain brand exclusively, it doesn't affect anything I do. I can afford any system, or number of systems I want but Canon and Sony aren't that interesting. Like I said, the photo is really blurry as I noted above, must have been using his go to camera, a phone. It's the photographer, not the camera body or lens that makes the difference. See also, responses in original paragraph (click on show quote).

Sorry you are dead wrong in your assessment of my motives for posting this. It was more about the move from the traditional past that I was part of, where Nikon and Canon dominated the pro photographers, often swapping top places as they released new tech advances , first one brand and then the other.

The Torch has passed in my post title was a reference to just the fact that nowadays it is Canon and Sony dominating the pro photography market. See I said Canon first, LOL

Nikon is still around with very good gear and beloved by many loyal users, amateurs and pros, who would never think of using anything else and that is totally fine and good. I want Nikon around with a seat at the table. Nikon gear has won me as many awards worldwide as my Canon and Sony gear over the decades.

But the Olympics this year is highlighting a sea change that has been reflected in the actual sales numbers and financial fortunes of these respective cherished brands. I am rooting for Nikon to fix its finances, put out some exciting new pro gear and again compete for the top of the pro heap.

I can tell you there are probably Nikon shooters at the Olympics who are using prototype models of the upcoming Nikon Z9 flagship camera and we will see some of those images when Nikon is ready to announce that camera. I can't wait. Use what gear you love and what works for your needs and your budget and be happy. There are no longer any poor cameras being released today.

Cheers
