The torch has passed, Sony and Canon are dominating the gear used by pros at Tokyo Olympics

A shot from pro photographer Don Roos who is in Tokyo covering the Olympics. At least at this venue, there were far more Sony and Canon cameras and lenses in use than Nikon or other brands. Sony lenses have the "G" on them. Black "G" for G lenses, and red "G" for G-Master lenses. And every Sony camera in use is mirrorless. And remember all Associated Press staff photographers worldwide use Sony gear exclusively. Photo by Don Roos.
You have to remember that these guys are pros, and they can pick and choose their equipment at a whim, whether on an in house expense account, tax write offs avail these guys to the best monster lenses and any up to date equipment. I’ve always used Nikon gear since the 1970s, because that’s what I learned on and the system is reliable. Like all photographers, I hope you all had a chance to upgrade with the digital and micro-mirrorless systems as I did. That’s what photography is all about learning to use whatever equipment you have to take the shot. I’ve gone through many systems and they are all great systems when you learn the fundamentals. Whether it be Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fuji, it’s all a personal choice. Yeah it would be nice to get an all expense paid vacation job to the olympics and just spray and pray your shots, nothing creative, it’s all about being at the right place and right time to pick one shot out of 1000s…

My Gosh, whatta bunch of snobs on here...quick to come to the defense of what doesn't need defending. And, how hypocritical!!! How many of you are the first to comment: "It's not the equipment, it's the person pushing the shutter release!"
Yeah a lot of people would say that but not me. I think the equipment should get at least half of the credit.

Actually based on what you said then the equipment that they use are the best. You said they can pick and choose anything they want so why wouldn't they choose the best?

Because Nikon has already eliminated most of its Japan camera assembly and manufacturing and moved it to the Thailand facility due to diminished product demand. The very few busy professional photographers I know have all switched to Canon because Canon provides excellent support ( fixing broken stuff quickly, lending replacement equipment overnight.) They were, as I am since all of my gear is Nikon, all Nikon users but poor Nikon Pro Support moved them to Canon, except one who went to Sony.
Gee, I still get all that from Nikon!
It’s ownership that counts not the art of photography!! You have to stay up with the trend.

As in most- if not all- past Olympic venues.
Marketing:
Canon can guarantee there will be working cameras and pro photogs.
There will be shelves of inew camera bodies and lenses.
Bins of batteries.
Runners making sure new cards are always available, and "used" ones are taken back for processing.
Now!
I don't recall any decent event that didn't have that black-and-white lens- right there! And there!
In the meantime, AP made their business decision a while ago.
Great discounts for bulk purchase of single items.
Great discounts for "product placement" advertising.
Great company and factory support for mono product experts.
EVERY thing fits. Works. Is 100% compitable. Is well known.

Photography is like getting married. One should never commit oneself until you've shot with Canon.
That’s the kind of expert, knowledgeable, fact based information that attracted me to UHH.

O.K. Let's talk Nikon for 1 second. Anyone heard when Nikon is to release their newest pro Z9 camera? It was supposed to be released for the opening of the Olympics
Not "released" but rumored to be in the hands of pros at the Olympics...operative word "rumored".
I posted a link to pics of the Nikon gear room at the Olympics earlier in this thread. I don't see anything I can identify as a Z9, but I did see row after row of the D6.
The rumor for release is November/December.

Yeah, I’m guessing it’s a limited number of pros that are testing it. Most pros aren’t gonna want to test new equipment at an event where success is that important.

Then you don’t rely on your own abilities sad

And this is of interest because?
With respect, it’s just general photography related information. I found it interesting. This is a discussion forum, right?

Yes I know for sure I make no photograph without the camera. It must deserve credit. I bought and paid for my camera so I own it but that doesn't mean I can take credit for what it does.
If a picture is good, it must have came from a camera embossed with the letters C A N O N.

They don't make them any more. Only the Canon is now available.
