I would look for another lens, but that's just me. There have been some not-so-nice reports of Sony repairs here. A repair would take a long time and be expensive.

Call Authorized Camera Repair in Willow Grove. (215) 659-2905. They are straight shooters. Ask them for an opinion.

It finally happened. I dropped my Sony a6000 with a Sony 4/18-105 lens attached while taking photos of Granddaughter at a softball tournament. I didn't believe it hit too hard from about 18" to the ground. I guess it did since it will no longer focus. I tried it on my Sony a6600 with the same result, so it is the lens not the camera. I bought it used from a UHHer about 3 years ago. Great walk-around for trips. Should I try to have it repaired, or just look for a replacement? If repaired -- with whom? I'm in Delaware. No warranty since it was purchased from an individual.

Thanks in advance.

Alan

My personal Rule of Thumb: if the cost of a repair is more than 50% the cost of new, buy new.

A friendly suggestion - get a neckstrap while your looking for repair or a new lens and use it.

I keep my neck strap around my neck whenever I’m using a camera without a support/tripod. I even keep it around my neck while I’m attaching or detaching my camera to a tripod

Personally, I would not have deliberately dropped the a6600 to test the failed a6000.

Um, he already said the problem was the lens.

Thanks so much for pointing that out. First mistake I've ever made.

I had a Panasonic LUMIX camera which got wet, and I sent it to Royal Camera Repair in Illinois, and they repaired it well and quickly. I think they were reasonable in their costs, too. I found them on the Internet.

A used a6000 is around $400, for a 7 year old camera, their holding their value very well.

I dropped my A77 ll, sent it to Precision Camera in Enffield Connecticut. Had to replace the in camera focus slider.
$450.00 to repair. Repair took 1 month. Really great customer service contact agents. Camera came back like new.

I had a similar situation myself when a grandson got hold of her A77 II and it hit the floor from about 36" - The camera still works, but has an error message come up in the LCD display - a picture of a orange hand with double parenthesis and the word Error displayed near the upper center of the display. Occasiionally, the camera will hang up and have to be shut off and back on to keep shooting. Otherwise seems to be doing OK. I checked out Precision Camera for repair of this model, and their quote was $498 +$45 shipping. There was no way that I would put out that much for a discontinued camera line that will be as extinct as the dinosaur in another decade or so. Instead I bought a well taken care of low "mileage" A77II from another hogger, and will keep the other as a spare. Just my thoughts FWIW.

I have tried a Canon 70-200 with a Metabones adapter (was using it on my a6600), and, it worked perfectly. So it must be the lens. Same non-focus issues with the lens on the a6600.
