The Durango/Silverton steam engine train ride was magnificent. So many gorgeous photo opportunities. The aspen might be full color peak.

If you ride the train in one of the open cars, be absolutely sure to have on wraparound sunglasses to protect yourself from flying cinders. I didn’t and needed to go to the Durango hospital’s emergency room to have a cinder removed. Most painful. Ruined the rest of the train ride.

Steam trains are so beautiful and picturesque, we forget their inherent problems.

We will be attending a wedding on Oct 8th this year. Haven't made flight plans or hotel reservations YET! Is there much to do there?
We are told you don't need a car in Telluride! So we can do the wedding and stay a few days OR We can stay around 5-6 days and wondering about other places to visit before the wedding.. Any suggestions?

Telluride is a high elevation delight. Lots of recreational opportunities if you go online. A drive to Ouray to take a dip in the hot springs is well worth the drive. I visited both Telluride and Ouray during the fall and the fall colors was magnificent. Go online to find and book recreation venues. Both cities attract a large variety of very wealthy celebrities who have secondary homes. A drive from Ouray over the pass to Silverton is breathtaking. You will have plenty to do.

You'll want to rent a Jeep 4X4 and try some of the great trails such as Black Bear Pass (3.6 miles one way from Red Mountain Pass to Bridal Veil Intersection).

Red Mountain Pass is loads of fun in a snowstorm.... I've done it several times and had white knuckles for days.

I Live In Montrose, CO about an 130 miles north of Telluride. A town of about 13,000. If you are flying in you should plan on flying into Montrose Regional Airport. Rent a car ( better reserve early) and drive to Ridgeway, CO take a right and head for Telluride. This side of the SanJuan Mountains to Telluride is much easier to drive than from Durango side. There are several name brand motels here, rates will be more reasonable than Telluride. From Montrose you can get to Ouray, CO and if you wish to go to Silverton from Ouray take the MillIon Dollar Hwy through Red Mountion Pass. This is a very senic drive, a shelf road with loads of histor, but as one member said it is a little scary since no guardrails, but safe your a cautious driver. With this advice you can do a little research on your on and plan your stay. Good Luck.

My goodness, YES! LOTS to do there. I live in Montrose and just 15 miles east of us on U.S. highway 50 is the entrance to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, a national park. And in Ouray is the Box Canyon. Well worth going to, too. Silverton, the other direction [south] from Telluride is an interesting town. Several ghost towns around, too, like Ironton. That's one of my favorite places to go to!! Need more ideas?

I could happily spend 2 weeks bumming around Colorado, maybe driving 100-150 miles a day at most between some of the most beautiful sites in N. America. It’s further afield, but don’t forget Pikes Peak and Rocky Mountain National Park.

You’ll need a long zoom lens and a very wide one for photography. And plenty of sunscreen since the whole place is over 4000 feet and the best above 7500 feet over sea level. The sun is fierce, and the UV a lot stronger than at sea level. Don’t forget UV filters (for the UV! Not just for protection) and lens hoods.

My son is a prof at UColo in Boulder. I think the city is a bit over rated and quite expensive.

Oh, forgot. You’re going in October. You could easily run into snow and ice in the mountains. If you’re driving make sure the rental agency lends you chains or a car with good snow tires.

Telluride is a snow ski recreation place but there is some 4-wheelin' you can do around there. Rent a car because you will want to drive to other places like Silverton, Durango, Ouray and other places along the million dollar highway.
