We will be attending a wedding on Oct 8th this year. Haven't made flight plans or hotel reservations YET! Is there much to do there?
We are told you don't need a car in Telluride! So we can do the wedding and stay a few days OR We can stay around 5-6 days and wondering about other places to visit before the wedding.. Any suggestions?
Can't help you out with Telluride, but I hope this trip is more successful than the last one you were planning! Glad you're getting out and going somewhere.

What's the difference between a few day and 5-6 days? And get a car. That way you can get away from the people and see SCENERY.

Thanks SWFeral, We finally did Yosemite in March. It was awesome
Nothing to do unless you like amongst the best scenery it the world.
I stayed in Durango for a vacation and went to Telluride. The whole area is incredible. When you are there, you have to go to Ouray. Ouray is an awesome town. I've been wanting to go back for a long time. You should also go to Durango and Silverton. There are steam trains that run between Durango and Silverton. Silverton is like going back to the 1800's. All of the architecture is as it was during the 1800's. Driving on the San Juan Skyway during a trip between Durango, Silverton, and Ouray is a scary experience. The highway is modern and in excellent condition but there are high drop-offs right next to the highway and there are very few guardrails next to the road. I had to pull over a couple of times to get it together before proceeding. When driving there, I tried not to look to the side and had my attention focused straight ahead.
From what I've heard, making reservations sooner, rather than later, is essential. Airlines are struggling to get planes back from the desert and find pilots and other crew.

The Durango/Silverton steam engine train ride was magnificent. So many gorgeous photo opportunities. The aspen might be full color peak.

I would rent a Kia Telluride...just because!
You will catch the end of the Aspen color season, which is worthy of a trip on its own. Telluride is beautiful but is just a tiny fraction of what you can see with a car and relatively short trips.

I have driven most of the "roads" around Telluride, Ouray, Silverton and Durango many times. Roads consist of black top or concrete highways, dirt roads or roads/trails for 4 x 4 only.
A must drive is CO 62 from Telluride to Ridgway with views of the Sneffels Range. Even better views are from the county dirt roads off of CO62 towards the Sneffels range. These roads are close to Ridgway. If weather is OK any car can drive these at least part of the way. Google Dallas Divide.
https://www.outdoorproject.com/united-states/colorado/dallas-divide-scenic-routeLast Dollar Road can be driven partly from Telluride or from CO 62 in a regular car. If you tried to take it all the way from one end to the other, you will likely need a good 4 x 4. Google Last Dollar Road.
https://www.colorado.com/articles/colorado-hidden-gem-last-dollar-roadAnother great drive is from Ridgway or Montrose to the Silver Jack Reservoir across Oak Creek Pass. A car can do it if weather is clear and snows have not yet hit the peaks. If the peak has snow, you can access the reservoir from US 550 from Montrose.

Most flights are to Montrose. I am nt sure if the Telluride airport is open to commercial carriers.
