For my Nikon Z5, I use both the original Nikon battery AND compatible "BM brand" batteries en-el15C, without any problems.
I tried an EN-EL 15C battery from Ansmann, which is a German battery manufacturer. The camera refused to start up with it in.
In the UK the cheapest Nikon EN-EL 15C battery that I could find was just short of £60, which I would not describe as cheap. The Ansmann batteries were half that.
Is there a list of compatible alternatives?

Some third party batteries are good and in theory some can be even better than Nikon batteries but if you ask me which battery I would buy if I need one? I would buy the Nikon one. It's not that expensive and it would surely work.
I agree. I tried several third party batteries when I had my Nikon and all failed before the original Nikon battery. I agree there are probably some good or better third party batteries out there but with the Nikon batteries you pretty much get what you expect which is good.
STK brand from amazon for my Nikon D500..they seem to have a lifespaN BETTER THAN THE oem nIKON EQUIVALENTS AT $19 USD EA.

I don't know the Z5 is $1300 in the USA and the battery is $73 in the USA. I would not hesitate to pay $73 for a battery for the $1300 camera.

I strongly recommend sticking with the OEM Nikon batteries AND chargers for your Nikon equipment. Yes, they are more expensive, and probably not manufactured by Nikon, but to Nikon's standards. It's just one less thing to worry about. I have, upon occasion, purchased non OEM batteries, but only when I couldn't get any thing else, and they were never up-to-par with their OEM counterpart. Best of luck.
Yes it's not like a Dewalt drill you can buy without battery for $129 but it cost $300 with 2 batteries.

Just Nikon for me. No aftermarket batteries for my Nikon cameras for me.

Nikon or Watson
I didn't buy a Watson, but it came with the D7200 that I bought from a UHH member last year. All I know about them is that I believe that KEH sells Watson batteries as it's "house" brand. It also came with a Nikon EL-15, as my D7100 before it. I've also used Vivitar batteries, which are rated at a significantly higher mAh, and have experienced NO problems with any of them.
NIKON OR WATSON batteries.
BUT- I have had two WATSON batteries go dead after three years of use, never had an issue with a NIKON battery.
So, depending on usage I would say either one is good but, while more expensive, the NIKON is the first choice.
The Nikon EL-15 is rated at 1900 mAh. I bought Vivitar batteries as extras, and those are rated at 2500 mAh. Plus, I can get a two-pack for less than the cost of a single EL-15 from Nikon. I've not had any bad experiences with them. I KNOW that Nikon doesn't make their own batteries. Very likely that there are only a handful of battery makers out there and the various camera companies just slap their own label on them. If they can be had for less, or even half the cost, why not?

I have only had the one Watson battery for less than a year, so I can't comment on how long it will last. I've had my D7100, with its original Nikon EL-15 for at least five or six years and it's still working fine.
However, most -- most! -- rechargeable batteries will last about three years, thereabouts, before they just won't hold a charge as long, may the longer to bring to full charge, whatever. So, even paying $50 or so for a Nikon branded battery, and it lasts at least three years, isn't that much on a per-year basis.
I have done fine with Wasabi. In fact, the Velo battery grip works fine with them, but not with Nikon batteries on my D850.

Interesting that after buying something that costs what the D850 does that you'd go with an aftermarket grip.
Personally, I'd stick with Nikon batteries. The main reason is that if something were to happen to the battery that would damage the camera, Nikon would refuse to service/repair if it were an aftermarket product.

Did anyone try Wasabi brand camera batteries?
