Two things that I've learned are: One - I am always suspect of anyone that calls me and anything that has to do with banking or services I tell them that I will hang up now and I'll speak to someone at the corporate office with a number that I know is legitimate. Two - I have a card that has a limited amount specifically for internet purchases from unfamiliar sites and private transactions.

The most telling features of an act of fraud is that they create a sense of urgency and they want access to funds. Both should be flashing red lights although I did receive a handsome fortune from the Nigerian Prince.

We live south in the winter, north in the summer. A couple of years ago when we went south for the winter I put my internet connection on vacation hold and put the $10.00 a month payment on a credit card from a noted Florida bank. About a month after we left I got a call from the bank about two charges one for $400.00 and one for $485.00
I informed them that I had not made either purchase and disputed the charges. I then called the manager of the internet service to find out what was going on and he would not answer the phone. He did not respond to e-mails and the bank could not tell me what the charges were for. They would investigate and let me know. 6 whole dmed months went by before they got back to me. Summer came and we returned north. The manager of the internet service had died and the service was no longer offered in our city. The bank said the charges were made for purchases through paypal and they did not know what they were for but because I had given my card number out I was responsible for the charges. I paid them cancelled the card and will not use that bank again EVER. But my credit score is very very good.

Unsolicited calls are banned at my house. I just ignore them. I answer calls from relatives and all others go to voicemail; even companies I deal with. Most scammers don't leave any message at all.

My smart phone has a screening option. When I get an unrecognizable call, I tap on the Screen Call, icon. Then the caller hears "Who is calling and what is the nature of this call?"
When I do that, the caller disconnects pretty fast. I love It!

I never give Credit card info SS# or any money to a voice on the phone. I was burned once by a phoney microsoft scam. I let him have access to my computer, but when he wanted money I hung up.. It cost me 100 bucks to have a local geekclean the computer. A lesson learned.

These companies that say they will clean up your computer are a scam. I have BitDefender, and along with its virus protection it also has a program that comes with their virus protection program that will clean up your computer. After I run it my computer runs much more smoothly and I don't have to open my computer to some suspicious person that I don't trust.

I received a call from someone representing him to be a Microsoft technician telling me that my computer was filled with bad stuff. In the past, of course, I just hung up, but the day before this I contacted a company called Restoro who charged me $135 to "clean" my computer. I assumed this was an extension of that. Anyway, I let him get access to my PC, and for the low price of $2.00, they would remove all the bad stuff. Well, dumb idiot I was, I tried to give them an American Express Card, they could not take that, so I gave them a Citi Bank Visa card that I only use at Costco. In about 5 minutes, I received a text from Citi Bank asking me if I authorized a cash advance of $1,997.99. I terminated the call with the scammer after indicating that he may be having an unnatural relationship with his mother and called the fraud department of Citi Bank. They actually put 2 charges through using an outfit called World Remit to send the funds to someone called Hazel and my last name in the Philippines. This happened on April 27, 2021. I disputed both charges and just last week they removed one of the charges, but one still remains. My question is, has anyone ever had occasion to not have a disputed charge removed from their credit card? I have an excellent credit score and although I really don't want to pay this, I'm afraid I will have no choice. Thanks for your help!

I too was scamed by Microsoft tech. He asked me to type in " ultraview" and then Bingo; he had control. He promised he was going to fix it, I knew that I had been had. I told him I was a senior and couldn't afford the $275 fee to fix, Oh he said, since your a senior, I make the cost $148. I told him to just put me back where I was before he got on: He then said, let me just fix things for only $48. I said no; I'll just take this 10 year old computer to the recycle center since I can't afford the $48. To my surprise, he returned me to original and I have been happy ever since.

I depend on American Express so much that when Costco abandoned them, I abandoned Costco. I walked out of a clothing store once because they did not accept A/E. The very few times I have had an issue, they resolved it to my satisfaction.

Don't leave home without it!

I find American Express is excellent at resolving disputed charges. I’ve only had one or two ...one they called me about, the other I contacted them...but they were resolved on the phone and immediately reversed. Some merchants don’t like Amex because their fees are higher than other cards.

If you have to fight for the other, then take the matter to small claims court. You do not need an attorney for this process. Once you serve the credit card company, then it will respond to the legal notice.

This approach may not work because of the terms of your agreement with the credit card company requiring arbitration of legal claims.

Good luck.

If I understand the transactions, the second was totally unauthorized and the first was excessive compared to what you were quoted by the scammer, correct? If that’s the case, keep the dispute going and ratchet it up. These days, many cards give us a hard time if we receive services even if the charge is not consistent with the going rate. The second charge, not authorized, is a no brainer. You may have to fight for the other.

This is a little bit off the OP’s issue but you should watch for any unrecognized charges regardless of the amount. Scammers will often put thru a transaction for amounts around a dollar to see if anyone’s paying attention before hitting for larger amounts.

You should have a feature on your phone to block calls from sources not in your contact list. Your phone will log the unwanted call and show it in the telephone monitor. But otherwise the call does not ring. Verizon has this feature, named Do No Disturb.

By federal law, the telephone companies soon will have to do even more to prevent unwanted calls from reaching your telephone in the first place.

I had false charges for online gambling (I don't) gamble online or otherwise> The bank kept sending me replacement cards which were hacked even before they arrived! I also received unsolicited from other banks as well. I contacted the the financial regulator (Australia) and all charges were refunded within two days. I left that bank and now have a debit card with a high end online only bank plus Amex cards. This took almost a year to sort out.

Absolutely! Attorney's fees will double your loss very quickly. Just notify your credit card company and tell then you have an unauthorized transaction. Your are liable for $50.00 at most because you did not notify them immediately.

I would cancel and replace both cards, American express and Citi Bank. Even if you did not give them both card numbers. If they have the numbers, they can still use it for smaller purchases and get away with it. Good luck with this incident.
