The first thing I would check is with a different lens do you get a sharp image in the viewfinder?

If no then adjust the Diopter setting for your viewfinder so the image is sharp and crisp with the "normal" lens then try again with the 150-600.

Let us know.

Hi all, I'm still a pretty green novice, but I'm enthusiastic (and retired, so fixed income) I have a little Nikon d3300 and love it for it's ease of use. I have a nice variety of lenses that I am able to use successfully. However, I purchased a Sigma 150-600 (see topic heading) and have had a terrible time getting a sharp focus. Apparently I need a higher end Nikon. I own an entry level Sony a230 and have a great telephoto lens that I use with it. Considering trading the Sony + lens for a Nikon that will work with the Sigma lens. Any suggestions? I'm hoping to do this in an affordable manner. Thank you.

Can you manually focus and get a sharp image ??

Is the lens under warranty? If so, assuming you have the dock, first, check to see if a firmware update is available. After installing and you still have an issue, call Sigma tech support. They will perform a focus calibration under the warranty. Yes, you can do it yourself, but prepare to set aside a good portion of the day with mixed results. Also, you’ll discover different methods on the wild web, better to talk with Sigma who will give you calibration information that’s useful even if you elect to not send the lens to them. I had similar issues with a Sigma 100-400 Cont and a Canon 7d2, and sent it to Sigma after trying a few times myself. Turnaround time was less than 2 weeks and it rarely leaves the body now. Good luck.

It sounds more like a faulty lens.

Are all your settings correct? Do you possibly have it set for manual focus and don’t have the VR turn on. What is your camera focus set at… manual or auto. Both should be the same.

I have adjusted the diopter. Even when I look at it on my computer. I get tack-sharp pictures with all my other lenses (if I pay attention while shooting) Thanks for your comments. I read and seriously consider ALL . Rita

Make sure the lens mode switch is not set to manual focus.

I used this lens with the D3300 and never had any issues with focusing. A large lens like this, hand held, requires high shutter speeds and because it's heavy, higher shutter speeds are good to use even when it's on a tripod. I have a feeling you may have a bad copy. It is possible to calibrate this lens yourself with the Sigma dock but as others have noted it can take hours and, unless you have experience doing this sort of thing, can be more frustrating than anything else. I would definitely reach out to Sigma as they may be able to help. I would also check to see if it's giving you out of focus results throughout the focal range. This lens can be "soft," especially between 500mm-600mm.

Thank you. I've rarely even tried hand held since I'm having such poor quality using the tripod and remote shutter release.

If shooting from a tripod/ turn Image Stabilization on the lens off.

I’m so sorry that this might seem like foolish answer. I have this lens on a D7200 and am very happy with it. Check your switches on the side of the barrel and make sure you’re on auto and not manual. It’s happened to me. It is a great lens to use. Had mine for years. Good shooting.

Make sure your camera is set to Autofocus and the switch on the lens, as well. It sounds as if you are not auto focusing.

Thank you. I've actually done all that. I'm just going to try harder, be patient, and use a step-by-step approach to see if I can determine what I might be doing wrong.

I'm auto focusing on one point, I'm also trying manual focus. Just not having good results. sigh.
