As it was, I feel privileged to have been there and witnessed it, and once the bird had flown to a nearby branch I was able to get a photo.

Found this site about photographing various dragonflies, although from a rather British point of view. He discusses one of the problems being catching one sitting still in order to photograph it. Fortunately for me, the kingbird had already taken care of that detail.
