I currently shot with the Nikon D-500, great camera however I am ready to upgrade to a higher sensor/ pixel count.
I am a printer and print with large format printer Epson 80600 10 color 65" & flat bed printer Canon Oce 4' X 8'
I am locked into a wide array of lens for the cropped sensor camera.
Will Nikon ever upgrade to a higher sensor such as a 45 meg, or is it all going to Mirrorless?
Thank you,
Already available D 850, unless I'm mistaken 45.7mp.
Rick. No one here will be able to definitively answer your question but you might get a pile of opinions. Historically all of nikons dx bodies have been at lesser MP counts. Clearly the big push is towards mirrorless. Tea leaves suggest you wont get a d500 replacement with a mirror.
I'll take a firm stand: there will be no new DSLRs from Nikon nor Canon. Neither company has any scheduled in 2021. A situation that has not existed since 2000.
The Age of the DSLR is over. The Time of the MILC has come.
Let history prove me wrong.

FX Nikon D850 is around 45MP but not APS-C but FF.
I don't think there will be a cropped sensor Nikon with 45 megapixels. You'll need to get either the full frame D850 or mirrorless Z7 or Z7II.

Read his post - does he say anything about format? Just MP.

The D500 may be the best APS-C DSLR camera ever built. There won't be anything after this--as you stated, the future is mirrorless.
One possible option is to upgrade to the D850. This means buying new FX lenses for a moribound system. I would only consider it if you had some good FX lenses already. But there won't be anything after the D850 either.
The other option is to go mirrorless. Plenty of choices here, as well as a technology that is advancing at an amazing speed. But none of this comes cheaply.
The third option is to be happy with the D500--which is a fine camera after all.

He did say that he is locked into a wide array of lens for the cropped sensor camera.

Are you speaking of future history?
Nikon Rumors is still talking about 2 new DSLRs for 2021 with one being a D850 replacement possibly with the Sony 61mp sensor that Nikon has reportedly agreed to buy from Sony. Another camera possibly using this sensor is rumored to be the yet to be announced Z8.
Another rumored camera from Nikon, expected to be announced this month is reported to be a retro-design mirrorless camera (ala Df) possibly based on a Nikon FE-10 design.
Let future history prove the rumors wrong.
The one rumored crop sensor mirrorless will be an entry level Z30 with no EVF and as such no high MP sensor.

If you want a very high pixel count, you’re going to need to go to FF - there are just no 45+MP APC Cameras that I’m aware of (someone correct me if I’m mistaken) - it’s a matter of max pixel density. I know you feel you’re “locked in” to crop lenses, but if you want a zillion pixels, sell the crop lenses and move to FF.

History and reality are on my side. So is NikonRumors and their non-stop reporting of S-lens and Z-body roadmaps coming out of Nikon. The market too has spoken.

I think there is no more Nikon DSLR. We can wait and see. FE-10, not a pretty design. Besides a mirrorless is not ala Df.

The "ala Df" was in reference to the retro design.
