A great reason for using a camera with interchangeable backs. One in use, and one or more loaded and ready.

Yes. The reported episode doesn’t quailify in the least as a “strange happening”. It’s a perfectly ordinary example of being out of one’s depth.

I lived in VS for a while with my first wife...off Central Ave by the SS Parkway...but enough of this, we already did an off topic number on this post, good chatting with you though

A couple of years ago we were visiting my son in Copenhagen. Our rental apt was only a few blocks from the local beach. I got up early the first morning thinking i might catch a neat sunrise and then early light on the buildings. So I walk over there with my tripod and photo backpack looking for a good spot to set up. I settle on a composition with a pier jutting in from the right. Just as I'm setting up the tripod an austere middle aged lady comes up to me and tells me that I can't be photographing there. Turns out the local custom is to walk out on the pier, disrobe and swim naked in the sea before going to work.

Good one. There’s a lotta very ordinary mishaps here offered up as “strange happenings”, but that one really fulfills the thread title. Thanks for that :-)

Well, there is no expectation of privacy in the US on a beach, so here, photography would be OK,, over there, who knows??? photo is of fire island light in background, did'nt contiue east past the sign with my camera and this sign may legally be an announcement that this is a private area..unknown

Nearly 50 years ago, a young friend who could not afford a professional wedding photographer, asked if I would take some shots at his evening reception. After some six shots with flash and shutter set at 1/60 second I decided that perhaps I would get better shots at 1/125 second exposure, forgetting that the flash synch on my Nikon F Photomic T only went to 1/60 second. So after those six shots, the rest exposed only half of each frame. I have worried, fretted and stewed over that error ever since that time. Reading this thread has actually been very therapeutic for me. I should probably send the equivalent cost of a few counseling sessions to dennis833.

Today's cameras solve that problem by not allowing a shutter speed which is too fast when the flash is attached and turned on.

I was on I-15, in California, near the Nevada border. We had been driving for hours and there was an off-ramp and we decided to get off and find some place to eat. We didn't have to drive very far because we came to a dead-end. There was a modern abandoned town, closed off by a fence, on the west side of the road. To the east was the Mojave Desert and a sign which read "No Trespassing." Staying on the road, I took a photo of a beautiful Joshua Tree in the desert. As I took the picture I looked up the road and there was a white (not black) SUV parked where we just came from. The windows were dark and we couldn't see anyone inside, but it was obvious they were looking at us and what we did. I stayed on the road (public property) stretching my legs, taking photos. When we stretched (there were no food outlets or other services there), we got back into the car and started back to the interstate. Before we could get to it, the SUV had turned around and crossed over the bridge over the interstate.

We had an interesting discussion all the way to Vegas. Who was in SUV? How did they know we were there? Why didn't they come up to us? Was it the government? Was it a private company protecting private property? Why was a perfectly intact town sitting abandoned behind a chain link fence? Most importantly, who were the people in the SUV and why were they watching us?

if you were for enuff north there is a closed area north of Vagus known as groom lake or area 51, that is exactly what you would have encountered had you gotten close to it.. that area is close to our navys China Lake and a lot of classified facilitys along with Edwards AFB and the army (ours I think) has a hugh training area near there ( Ft Irwin?)

Some years ago my wife and I sailed to Key West and I quickly took notice of an attractive young gal on the dock, who was mostly tucked to her bikini. The next day she agreed to let me photograph her and soon offered to pose topless. After a few shots, I ran out of film and suggested we go from the dock to my boat to let me reload and continue the project. Just as she stepped into the cockpit, with her bikini held high in the air, my wife came up from the cabin. My wife looked from me to this bare chested young lady and back; and I felt I had no choice but to introduce them. After which my wife said, "you two have fun, I have to go into town shopping."

To this day, I keep wondering whether or not that was an insult, or just an expression of complete faith.

Setting up my tripod to take an image of Yellowstone falls a Chinese woman walked right in front of my tripod. I tried to shoo her but instead she handed me her phone to take a pic of her (with hand gestures). I did and happiness reigned.

I had equipment run over by both Elk and Moose. The most recent was a tripod, camera and lens set up for a night sky time-lapse. A bull Elk walked right over the equipment. Fortunately nothing was damaged but it did give me a bit of a scare. The Moose, I think, was simply curious and knocked over my tripod as it walked down the trail.

On Thursday I found myself surrounded by 3 police cars and 6 policeman.
A woman living in a small country town in Tasmania, Australia had reported me to the police as a hitman with a tripod and rifle looking for the best location to take the shot. Apparently the woman had an argument on social media and that person was sending a man around to shoot her. The funny thing was that I ended up having a laugh with 6 policeman in a quite location by a river bank.

When Twitler was inaugurated as president and his border wall became all the rage, I went to Border Road in San Diego to take pictures of the border wall that already existed. I started at the Pacific Ocean and drove about 15 miles inland. At that point when I stopped, 13 Border Patrol vehicles descended upon me. They asked me what I was doing and I told them I was taking pictures of the border wall. They said I couldn't do that because it was illegal. Okay, whatever. They last thing I wanted to do was get arrested and then have to spend a lot of money in court proving that they were wrong. They asked to see the pictures I had taken and made me erase every one of them. Then they all left. I turned around and drove back to the Pacific Ocean, stopping to retake all the pictures that had been erased.
