On Thursday I found myself surrounded by 3 police cars and 6 policeman.
A woman living in a small country town in Tasmania, Australia had reported me to the police as a hitman with a tripod and rifle looking for the best location to take the shot. Apparently the woman had an argument on social media and that person was sending a man around to shoot her. The funny thing was that I ended up having a laugh with 6 policeman in a quite location by a river bank.

I was photographing a wedding with a medium format film camera. I was photographing the bridesmaids coming down the aisle. As one began her walk I realized I shot the last frame. So I had to wind the roll to the end, load a fresh roll of 120, wind it to the first frame. I got it done and took her picture in time. That was a stressful success.

I frequently use a sling strap to carry my tripod over my shoulder. Once when joining a group for a daybreak shoot in the Wichita Mountains Wildfire Refuge I was asked if I planned on shooting a buffalo.

When I was in collage at Baylor University I worked as a photographer for the university publications. There was a tragic incident of a dead baby found in a trash can next to a women's dorm, and they were going to have a funeral. The newspaper editor wanted photos, and have a reporter (a woman) come along. I didn't want to be too obtrusive, so I parked a ways away and shot with a telephoto from my two seater sports car. All of a sudden, a couple police cars came up and told us to get out of the car. Turns out someone saw us and suspected we might be the parents of the baby.

I was doing a wedding reception and the groom and maid of honor disappeared. I went looking in the parking lot cause I needed the groom to cut the cake and noticed a van was rocking, and so did the bride, after looking inside the window the bride stormed back into the reception, grabbed the mike from the band and announced that the reception was over and everyone needed to go home.
I was glad I had been paid in advance.

Agreeing to help a friend as a second shooter for a wedding…upon showing up I find her lying on the ground in severe pain. She had just thrown her back out. Guess who who shot the entire event.

35 years ago I was shooting photos of a historical home in Ventura County, California. The ranch house style home was owned by the late stunt double of silent screen actress Mary Pickford. Walking through the house was a history lesson (literally). I walked into the bathroom and saw a hole in a bathroom medicine cabinet mirror and a little green plastic army man (toy)stuck in the hole (rifle barrel end first).

I asked the old lady why that was there. She said 40 years earlier (World War II period) her young nephew was visiting and he was quick drawing with a .22 pistol and shot the medicine cabinet by accidental discharge. She put the army man there to always remind him and she never removed it.

I took a photo of that mirror (w/Nikon N2000). When I developed the photos there was a ghost image of a mans face staring at me in mirror, it wasn't my face or anyone else that I know. And, it wasn't a double exposure photo.

That old lady's nephew had died tragically 30 years previously and the feeling I got (crawly skin still) is it was him as an adult peering back at me in the mirror as I looked at that bullet hole and toy soldier.

I was stationed in West Berlin in the middle of the Cold War (mid 60’s). A friend and I were out taking photos of the minefield, tank traps and barbed wire that separated East from West (no wall around the suburban areas) when we came upon a Soviet platoon across the border. Naturally, we kept snapping, and the Soviet lieutenant objected. We exchanged some heated comments in Russian. Then the damn officer grabbed a rifle from one of the soldiers, and we got the Hell out of there. Это правда.

Was doing a legal shoot for law firm, young lady (mid 20's) with bite/scratch marks on her back from a dog attack (my wife and sometimes helper was waiting in the car outside while I did a 20 minute session)...upon completion of the shoot, the young lady completely disrobes and asks me to do a nude session. When I told her "not without my assistent and witness", we were done!! She would have been a fine model, but in diff circumstances.

Another episode (for same law firm)...older couple staying in local motel, shoddy bathroom, loose tiles, slip and fall with bad (operable) leg break and knee damage. After shooting the motel bathroom, went to hospital for shots of her injuries. Was so focussed on the injuries and gettin it done, that I never noticed till the attorney and I were looking at the proofs that her hospital gown did not cover her naked, legs spread, cootchie/croch...woohoo, some cropping was definitely needed!!

Photography is often an adventure!!

I was shooting a college flag football game, and one of the intrepid players had a cast on his leg. He played line-defense, so all he had to do was block, and was a pretty big, strong fellow, mostly using his good leg. Wouldn't you know, he ended up intercepting a blocked pass! On one leg, dragging the broken one behind, he set off down field, his whole team rallying around him. He must have made at least 15 yards, me clicking away, amazed at what I was getting on film. To my dismay, I later found out that my shutter had broken (old Chinon!) just before the broken-leg runner series, and none of the photos turned out. I went out and bought a Nikon after that!

You missed a golden opportunity to throw the switch from being a wedding photographer to that of a P.I. photographer. Perhaps the photos of the "damning evidence" would have commanded much higher compensation from the divorce attorney.

A number of years ago my wife and I were out on a job to photograph two young boys. We chose a local Audubon center as the location,, and we had shot jobs there often in the past. To get there from the parking area it was about a third of a mile walk on a dirt road, and it was a nice warm New England day in August. We were still shooting film at the time, but I brought with us our brand new, never used on a job, Canon digital 20D. But the plan still was to shoot the job with film. I, as always, was lugging all the gear, 2 cameras strapped around my neck, and a camera bag heavily loaded with other gear. As we were walking on the dirt road I suddenly noticed a rather large black snake sunning himself on the road, and about to be stepped on by the youngest boy trotting ahead of us, and as he did, the snake reared up and tried a strike at me. I lunged back to avoid the bite and went crashing down on the ground...the new 20D hit the ground with me, but luckily it was undamaged. Needless to say everyone was quite rattled, and the little guy was crying hysterically. I thought, a great way to start a session and the little guy's face was going to be all red and swollen looking from crying so much. Well, we finally got to the location, and we were all trying to calm down from what had just happened. My wife grabbed the Canon film camera and wanted to start shooting. She banged out around 15 shots, or so, and she comes over to me and whispers, "Vin, I'm shooting, but I don't see the film advancing?" Well, in all the excitement, she/we forgot to load a new roll of film, so I told her to quickly and privately go load the camera...I'll keep the kids and their mom entertained while you do it. In a semi panicked state, and already flustered from all that had already happened she accidently put her finger through the shutter curtains as she tried to load the film...the camera was now unusable. Needless to say, the new 20D got to see it's first use on a photo session, and the photos came out fine, although not being familiar with the camera, or shooting digital at the time, I was a little worried about it. Some years later, the mom hired us again to now shoot the boys when they were older, and we had a good laugh over what had happened that eventful day!

After a nothing shoot at a state park, I was walking back to my car and noticed three colorfully dressed women wearing saris; I think a mother, daughter and grandmother. They were taking a selfie. I offered to take a photo of the group in return for taking photos of them. They were pleased, I was pleased. I used the loo to wash my hands and once again ran into them. They asked if they could have their picture taken with me. I was touched,
