They get pretty big sometimes. 🆒🆒🆒🆒

You’re right, Joe. They come up from the pond every year to lay eggs and this is one of the smaller ones we’ve seen.

Excellent shot John, just look at those claws!

Thank you, Sylvia. They come up to lay eggs every year and this is one of the smaller ones. I keep my distance.

That is great to hear, John. I understand better now - must have been difficult to watch the flowers being trampled

I checked out your last Food section posting. Thanks for mentioning the section!

Hi Linda, always so nice to hear from you. My wife was frustrated but we’re both big nature lovers so the eggs are safe. It was really rather funny but I didn’t dare laugh. My wife was in the kitchen window calling out progress reports to me in the den. “She’s turning left.....oh no, there goes another marigold”.

Just so you know, I’ve resumed my food photography and am posting in the new foodie section once every few weeks. I hope all is well with you.

Thanks, Linda. The only thing missing for me in the food forum was your friendship and support. I don’t see you posting in the gallery. Are you posting anyplace else on UHH?

This snapping turtle came up from the pond, buried her eggs in my wife’s flower garden (my wife’s not too happy) and posed for a portrait before returning to the pond.

Nice capture

You’re right, tradio. This one is actually small compared to some that come up from the pond every year. They swim up under the baby ducks and pull them under.

Wonderful shot! Mean looking!
When you describe the turtles eating the ducks is typical of a pond that probably has few fish in it because the turtles have 'over grazed most other wildlife'.

If you're not careful the pond will become a one species body of water and not a place to dangle your toes in.
If you want a more diverse pond it would be good to gather more info on how too thin the turtle population.
IMHO!

It was nice of her to pose for the portrait, and first-rate results!

Great eating, 7 different kinds of meat. But a pain in the butt to clean.

Thank you. We still have fish but the number is decreasing. In the past, most of the fishermen lived on the pond and would catch and release but we now have a growing number of outside fishermen who are keeping the fish. We’ve had several meetings with the town about closing the pond to fishing to let the fish replenish and have now involved the state. The state agrees so it looks like we may be getting some results.

Thank you, John. Because of my loss of mobility, I’ve begun to do more of my posting on the new foodie forum in case you were wondering where I’ve been.
