Thanks for all
the replies.

Follow up question: how many prints &/or how often have you found you need to print to keep the nozzles from clogging - which I understand leads to costly cleaning vis-a-vis the inks…

Thanks in advance!

Printing a single full color 8x10 photo each week will usually keep Epson heads clear. Use ink by the expiration date on the package, or within six months of putting it in the printer, whichever comes first.

The ink sets for the Epson XP-15000 and ET-8550 are a little different.

Both are 6-color and both use Claria, dye-based inks.

But the XP-15000 ink set is Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, Gray and Red.

The ET-8550's in set is Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, Photo (Matte?) Black, Gray.

I don't use either, so can't say from my own experience. It would be great if someone would compare prints from both. I have noticed some other new and recent printers have started adding red ink, like the XP-15000 uses.

Correct... These Epson ink sets share the same chemical pedigree, although the ET 8550 is better if you print black-and-white on matte papers, or print often, and want less expensive OEM inks than the ones for the XP-15000.

The XP-15000 is an older design. Its relatively small cartridges make it expensive to use, although several companies have come up with third-party continuous ink supply systems for it. The Red ink makes it especially good for warmer colors on glossy or semi-glossy papers.

I think Epson claria inks are unbeatable and will only use those for printing pictures

burkphoto,

Thanks! It doesn't seem to be in stock at Adorama, & only on pre-order from B&H.

Of course, I will call Epson to get the details…

Dell has them instock

I have had the XP 15000 for close to 3 yrs. It is an awesome printer and I have not had any trouble what so ever. The Claria inks are all HD, the only difference is standard capacity and XL capacity. Absolutely beautiful colored prints. B&W are ok but it passes for me. It cannot us matte black which limits paper selection at times. Epson does not have an ICC profile for their Hotpress neutral and bright, which is a bummer. ICC profiles are available from Hahnenmule and Moab papers, where this printer excels. I do use Epson Velvet, ultrapremium photo luster ulra premium glossy with excellent results. I have won some contests with my photography club using this printer.

Before you do ANYTHING, look at their new wide format PHOTO supertank printer:

6-color Claria® ET Premium Ink bulk ink system built-in. This is their lowest cost Claria Photo ink option, but with the most advanced version of the same Claria ink set they have used for many years.

YES, you pay more up front, but the low cost of ink will more than make up for the front-end price of the printer.

This printer is basically an EcoTank version of the XL 15000.

I am heading to downsize and retire over the next year. Going to try apartment living while we figure out the right size (we just do not need our 4 BR place anymore) So, I am not buying a new printer yet, but after we settle down, this is the one I have been thinking about.

The ecotank idea is awesome!

We have an ET-4700 home office printer. It’s great for anything but photos. It’s cheap to operate.

Thanks for taking the time to reply; however my question was explicitly about the color rendition of Claria standard vs hd inks.

UPDATE: I just saw that the Claria Standard & HD are the same inks, just diff sizes!

I am getting up to speed thanks to comments here.

Strodav,

Thanks for your reply & report on your experience using the 15000. Just the kind of insight I hoped to get!

Pritch, thanks for the feedback on performance… Why can't 15000 use Matte paper & how does that furtther limit the paper you can use? Is taat for B&W, or color too? I thought it was either a choice of Matte or Glossy…

Also, can you share any guidelines abt how papers need to be stored - temperature-wise & I'd imagine NOT in a sunny corner of one's house…

Thanks again!

is that only in regard to B&W or color too? As I haven't bought PRN yet, I'm hoping to learn as much as I can here…

Have you heard abt the Epson ET-8550 ?
I heard it uses a sep black ink…

Retro-active congrats on winning those contests, that's a real selling point forsthe PRN!
