I use to have a pentax Spotmatic f, but that was many years ago. I want to get another camera, and money really isn't an issue. However, I don't want a camera that is going to be cumbersome or have so much over my head technology that I wouldn't enjoy it. I am a novice and want a really good quality camera along with whatever other gear I might need. Since I have nothing now I'm feeling like I should probably go mirrorless, but I don't know. I've got a lot I don't know that I'm willing to learn but I'm not into it to the point that it will ever be a career. Mostly family pictures, maybe some photo shoots for family for only what it costs me or maybe free if its a simple session. Love traveling and shooting wildlife/landscape. I would welcome advice on brand, type to consider along with other gear I might need without a bunch of needless purchases I would never use. I welcome any and all advice from those who may have the same interests.

You do know that Pentax still makes cameras, don't you? My Pentax KP is a nice "APS-C" camera; the "FF" K-1 costs a tad more.

I am not a Nikon user - but I did go to our local camera store when Nikon came through with their "road show" introducing the Z7. I was impressed with the whole setup, especially the EVF which I was hardly aware of not being "live". It is a lot of money - but so is the D850. I'm afraid I'm not much help here.

No worries, I pulled the trigger and bought the D850. I do not regret it one bit!

There is no denying that mirrorless is the future of photography. I personally am not sure if and I will go mirrorless. I really like my 6 month old Nikon D500 I am still learning how to use. In conclusion my vote would be for DSLR.

Sony makes Nikon's high-end sensors. They've embedded a clever bug into all Nikon cameras with these Sony sensors: the Nikon suddenly dies for every new Sony mirrorless sold. Just look online for 'Nikon Sudden Death Syndrome'. I've seen a thread where they think from your Nikon serial number you can identify the week number in the calendar year (01 -> 53) your camera is most likely to die.

BTW, why bring this March 2019 thread back to life? Are you so insecure about your D500 that you need to post another brag onto every historical thread on the site? Have you considered the Active Topics link to find active discussions for your insecurity bragging? Did you check in yet with this UHH member? https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/user-topic-list?usernum=79124 I think half his arsenal went down with NSDS recently.

For all those folks that think Pros still only use or prefer DSLRs over Mirrorless , here is the news that the Associated Press is switching to Sony Gear:

Says AP's Director of Photography: "We're confident that they can deliver"

I have both DSLR & DSLM, Nikon N50, Nikon D7100, (for film) Nikon N50 & Nikon D90. Tamron 14-250mm Nikon compatible lens Nikon 200-500mm lens and fixed Nikon 35,50,85mm primary lenses. Want to keep the Nikon complement because of versatility and film compatibility. However it is very difficult to travel with. No DSLM will work with film. However I prefer my OLY OMD for portability and convince. Recently I bought a Sony Z100 with 14-70mm noninterchangeable zoom lens. I plan to use that for trips, especially air trips. easily fits into carry on luggage bag with room to spare. The crossover P&S/DSLM hybrid camera, compact and light weight. Ideal for the traveler. For video I use a GOPRO Hero 7. The Sony Z100 series is available with up to a 200mm optical zoom. It does just about anything a DSLM would do.

Unless I already had f-mount lenses I would not choose the D850. The Z7 is Nikon's first serious attempt at mirrorless and is far behind the completion.

Look at Canon or Sony mirrorless.

Why do you keep posting this same nonsense over and over again? People on this site have seen your post many times and discovered that it's incorrect. I've had many Nikon digital camera and still do. All of the sensors are operating like new. I know many photographers who shoot with Nikon. Not one has had a sensor go bad.

If you want to make enemies, say something true about Nikon in November 2019 and some Nikon FanBoy will come and try to police the internet in February 2021 ....

What garbage you come up with. I don't think anybody tries to police the internet. People read posts on UHH and come across misinformation like what you post over and over. again. Other people on UHH have already stated that what you've posted over and over again is false.

For shutters, the so called "blackout" period of a mirror has never been any issue for me, nor the need to see a live view very important. I actually find that distracting.
Sure, a Fugi GFX is great, and I have owned two mirro-less cameras to date, but... at the end of the day, when milliseconds count or light conditions are poor, my Canon 1DX MK3 will bring home the bacon in more situations.
Purchasing a camera for it's sensor "rating" in size, pitch, area and density is way more important than what shutter is going to uncover the sensor in hundreds, or thousandths of a second.
Then there's more... and more... and more megapixels. That's another deceptive sales tool that can reduce your odds of success.

People who don't own mirrorless cameras will often recommend the DSLR, people who own recent models of the mirrorless cameras will enthusiastically recommend the mirrorless.... I know an old man who will tell you that a 1966 Chevey Impala was the best car ever made.

I have 2 Nikon Z bodies. I still mostly use my DSLRs.

You may be speaking for yourself, but not for everybody. If I lost all my photo gear my first purchases would be a D850 and F-Mount 500mm - PF.

I shot pro Canon and Nikon for 40 years (both brands) before switching to fullframe Sony mirrorless back in January 2017 and I have never looked backwards. This is NOITHING I miss about using those outdated bricks. My Sony A1 , A7RIV and A7SIII outshine any DSLRs still around.

Associated Press, the Worldwide News Organization, dumped their Canon DLSRs and moved exclusively to Sony mirrorless gear for all their staff photographers and videographers worldwide. AP shooters have to "bring home the bacon" every time in the harshest and toughest situations. So for them the move to mirrorless makes the most sense as it did for this award-winning photojournalist.

That DSLRs are dead meat was decided back when this thread was opened in 2019. Why is the corpse giving another shake in May 2021? Did someone's DSLR finally explode into end-of-life dust in their camera bag?
