The comments in the report are funny. Basically, "I don't like this post, so it must be inaccurate."

I find it interesting how these lists change due to who is making out the list.

Ooooohhh goody, a link :-/
Wondering how you got away with that in an opening post .....
Actually I would be surprised if that is true.

Same here, and I didn’t even click the link. Not as if I’m overly cynical. Just appropriately cynical. I often read links without clicking them. There is usually sufficient info within the posted link to allow “judging the book by its cover”.
The thread title holds the promise of some entertainment when the usual suspects file in.

I saw this post on a different online venue. Because it is in direct contradiction to what most photographer customers in the USA believe does not make it incorrect. Based on what I know of the Pentax K1 ii, KP. and K3 iii, I would guess the popularity of the brand in Japan is much higher than it is in the USA,
I find it difficult to believe that Pentax is No. 1 in Japan. Like I find it difficult to believe that Olympus rated 11% in the last place.
The Olympus EM-10 Mk II was the camera that saw more sales in Japan in 2020.

The rating was not for volume of sales, but popularity, which can produce the same or a different result.
Whatever one believes, it appears that American camera buyers generally prefer Canon, Nikon, and Sony but that may not be true in other countries. For example, the popularity and sales of recent Pentax/Ricoh models (K1 iii, K3 iii, KP, GR iii, and the "Limited" lenses) do well in Europe and Asia, but not in the USA. An important aspect to this is quality by cost. I just don't think there are Canon, Nikon, or Sony models that are of equivalent or higher quality for the same prices.
"Favorite" is (1) entirely subjective and (2) the result of a group of self-selecting participants. So not data-based in any way and has entertainment value only.
The same story was picked up by Digital Camera World out of the UK. The survey in Japan will be completed May 27 so some numbers may change.
I'm a Pentax fan from way back, am heavily invested in Pentax and I have no interest in the big three here in the USA (canikony). Pentax/Ricoh may be the last of the DSLR manufacturers after the dust clears.

I agree with you, and when the dust clears Pentax may be the only reliable source for non-mirrorless DSLRs.
