I've had the Tamron 18-270, 16-300 and the 18-400 for my cameras, first a D5000 and currently a D7100. The build quality of the 18-400 is better than the two earlier Tamron super zooms, and I don't notice mine being overly stiff. I find less lens creep on the 18-400 than on the earlier models. I keep the 18-400 on my D7100 all the time, and would not hesitate to buy another one should the necessity arise.
I agree the build quality is good, but it is not sharp if you compare it with the Canon 100-400 ll. I sold mine because once you are use to sharp photos, it is hard to accept anything less.
