[quote=Gene51]Well, a lot of comments talk about the convenience of having a single lens that "does it all"....
My old pal, pro Charlie Harbutt "did it all" with a normal Leica lens. But he was a real pro not some bumbling amateur! I followed him into some pretty strange places when we were running around together but he always got the shot he wanted.
Harry PS I'm not much of a photographer but I 've never felt that I needed more than 300mm mydamnself. I have a drawer full of lens but I pretty much use just two: a 50mm and a 70-300.
I have a 16-300 Tamron so I can use the lens on my older bodies. I've found it to be sharp and contrasty enough to go with me everywhere I don't need a 2.8 lens.
My Tamron 18-400 mm lens, which is attached to 1.4X Tamron tele extender is constantly on my Nikon D500. This way I have a longer telephoto for birds, squirrels and rabbits and a wide enough lens for landscapes and groups. I am happy with the lens, the tele extender and the combination.
If there is any noise or softness I use Photoshop for post production.
In general my view is that the subject is more important than absolute sharpness and no noise. I think that too much is made by some about the latter two. Still, photographs with the Nikjon 200-500 mm, which is a better lens, are nice to look at.
I would also like to add that I do not consider myself to be a great or even a good photographer and/or an expert. All I am is an old man who likes to take picture, who has been doing doing it for more that 75 years.

I’m cautiously optimistic, would you want to sell it?
Not yet...just thinking about it. If I do, I'll list it here first. Thanks for your interest.

Compromises only happen when there is a competitive target price point. Some of the most expensive zooms on the planet - like these -

They'd better be for the $45K they cost. So, I think it's best for you to qualify that for low cost consumer grade zooms, yes, of course, compromises are made. Mainly because the target purchaser is not all that discriminating and ok with an average or lower quality lens for the sake of convenience.
I am familiar with at least three other high quality zoom lenses that come to mind that have few if any compromises - at least not when it comes to image quality. The Sigma 300-800mm F5.6, the Nikon 70-200 F2.8 FL, and the Nikon 180-400 F4 zooms. These are, without a doubt, equal to any prime lens in their focal length ranges. I've used them all, so I speak from firsthand experience. None are in the realm of consumer priced lenses.

Add the Canon 100-400mm MII and the EF 11-24mm f4 and the EF 200-400mm f4 are what most primes aspire to emulate for quality, especially the 11-24mm. Other zooms are distant second places.

What do you think of this multipurpose lens? Is it worth it or are they trying to take on too much?
I have this Tammy for my Canon 90D and find it a nine all-around unit.
I used the 18-400 on nikon D7500 on African safari. Used it to take almost
12,000 pictures in 28 days. Fantastic lens, superb picture quality one lens trip.
My 18 400 has been on my 7d2 for almot a year I use it as my travel/knock around lens. I would buy another . No its not the sharpest lens but it does ok. In less than good light it can hunt a little for focus
It works best when caibrated to the body !
It is even short enough to get through the gate at Miller Park for Milwaukee Brewers games.

As long as use can get into the Brewer games and get a beer and a bratwurst it is acceptable.. Miss my Wisconsin food. In Florida.
I have the Tamron 18-400mm lens mounted on a Nikon D7500. It's not the sharpest lens but performs quite well. It is a bit heavy. That being said, I like it pretty well when I don't want to take multiple lenses for the day. Good luck.

I'm with your sentiment being from the Chicago area. Florida and Texas are a great States to live in right now and getting more popular by the day, but I miss Italian beef with sweet and hot peppers, real Chicago style hot dogs as well as chili dogs, Chicago style pizza. I miss Portillos and Aurelios.
I have the 18-400 Tamron lens for my Nikon 5300. It's my walking around go to lens and it has traveled with me to many continents. It works for me and my friend bought one also and he is happy as well. I really like the flexibility and I only want to carry one lens while traveling.
