The Joro is native to China, Japan and Taiwan. The Joro was first sited here in Georgia and there have been reports of sittings in South Carolina. It most likely arrived here hitching a ride in a container from the west coast or the port of Savana. It is non poisonous. A relative is Coosin-Banana spider from South America and Caribbean. It is the only spider in this country that will consume the invasive Brown Marmorated Stink Bug.
The Joro does not compete with other orb weavers as it spins it’s web higher. The example here was under the soffit of my house. In Asia their presence is said to bring good luck. The females are larger than males. The example is a female with a leg spread of about 5 inches.

Colorful critter! Thanks for the info, it is always good to get something for the brain along with something for the eyes!
Poul.
Nice set. I love any critter that will eat stinkbugs.
Great shots of a really colorful spider. Unfortunately the likelihood of it not having negative affects on native species is somewhere between slim and none.
Better buy a lottery ticket in case the rumors are true. Nice photos.

That is one colorful spider. Good shot and thanks for posting.
What a gorgeous arachnid!
(Send it north - we have plenty of stink bugs to fill it’s larder.)
Thank you all for your comments!
Wow, what a lovely species. I hope that they make their way here for we have horads of Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs for them to dine on.
That is pretty cool! Glad to see an invasive species that is not seen as problematical. And they can has all the invasive marmorated stink bugs they want.
