The Joro is native to China, Japan and Taiwan. The Joro was first sited here in Georgia and there have been reports of sittings in South Carolina. It most likely arrived here hitching a ride in a container from the west coast or the port of Savana. It is non poisonous. A relative is Coosin-Banana spider from South America and Caribbean. It is the only spider in this country that will consume the invasive Brown Marmorated Stink Bug.

The Joro does not compete with other orb weavers as it spins it’s web higher. The example here was under the soffit of my house. In Asia their presence is said to bring good luck. The females are larger than males. The example is a female with a leg spread of about 5 inches.
