Look through the eyepiece and see if you have the same effect. If not the problem lies with the way the screen interprets the image. Do you get a similar effect with other lens, or if using a zoom at differnt settings.

Does that include when shooting wide angle? If you have an inappropriate lens hood it will be visible only at short focal lengths.

Not if the computer is set to automatically enlarge the picture on opening

Assuming the phenomenon exists all the time and not just live view, my vote is LCD or associated circuitry.

Is it possibly due to a picture control with either very high contrast or with extra vignetting applied? Why is the heavy vignetting not seen in the output? Perhaps because she works with RAW format?

What picture control and adjustments is she using?

This could happen if you are using a wide angle lens and you put your lens hood on and it is off 90degrees. The top and boded are long and the sides are shorter. If off 90degrees the top and bottom, nor on the sides, crop you picture.

My guess is moisture creeping in from the corners. I have seen such weird things on my underwater cameras, many state only 1 hr at a time in the manual. Not saying she dunked it, just occurring over time.

You're not using the right lens 4 this model is why the corners are round.

Thanks everyone for your reply.

As previously stated, i'm just wondering if the same problem has been encountered before by the group. Based on replies, there is only one other occasion in the net that shows a similar case on a Nikon D7000.
https://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/76786/how-can-i-fix-the-dark-corners-on-the-rear-lcd-of-my-nikon-d7000
So it seems that although uncommon, it does happen to Nikon cameras.

For those asking details;
Model Nikon D3300 APS-C
Age 6 years (as posted before, this was a gift i gave to my daughter on her 9th birthday https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-661704-1.html)
Shes has been using it since so user error is unlikely.
Lens, Nikon 18-55 kit lens that comes with the camera
& Tamron AF 70-300MM F/4-5.6 DI LD Macro Nikon (full frame lens)

We have decided to send it out for repair but at the moment still looking for the correct service center (We are not in USA). Repaired or not, it still works as only the rear LCD is affected. Photos are normal and have no vignette.

I was wrong to assume that the edge pixels are dead because it was still showing the numbers/data although those parts are also a little bit faded.

I'm also diagnosing the problem in the same situation as everyone because i'm on a different country and we are just communicating through the net.

Again thanks for the answers. I will update any other info we get out of it specially what the repair station would say. Never the less, I'm planning to get her another camera. Probably the D5XXX series if not a D7200.
Thanks everyone for your reply. br br As previous... (show quote)

While the D3300 may not be worth repairs, it's still perfectly usable as a viewfinder only camera. Having grown up in the film era a viewfinder seems just fine to me. Adding a D7200 to her gear seems a great idea to me.
Best of life and luck to you and your daughter.

The OP has stated more than once that there is no vignetting of the image when downloaded onto a computer. The problem is only on the LCD monitor.

Maybe this needs to be repeated several more times for those who don't/can't read.

The flaw you experienced was almost perfectly centered and symmetrical very much like case in question ? It’s hard to imagine, but I’m really open to hearing about it either way. It’s the puzzle of LCD monitor panel or graphics “card”, will it be superficial or internal surgery.

The image in the first post shows that the alpha-numeric data along the bottom is being affected by the vignetting. That text has nothing to do with the image that's coming in via the lens, sensor and circuitry so the fault has nothing to do with that side of the camera's workings. It must be purely a viewscreen problem.

If there is an hdmi out from the camera that could be connected to a video monitor you could see if the problem lies before the signal gets to the camera's lcd screen or is from the processing circuitry of the camera itself.
