That is the notation for infantry.

Sorry, I was mistaken.
Combat Infantryman Badge:
The Combat Infantryman Badge is a United States Army military award. The badge is awarded to infantrymen and Special Forces Soldiers in the rank of Colonel and below, who personally fought in active ground combat while assigned as members of either an infantry, Ranger or Special Forces unit, of brigade size or smaller, any time after 6 December 1941. The CIB and its non-combat contemporary, the Expert Infantryman Badge were simultaneously created during World War II to enhance the morale and prestige of service in the infantry. Specifically, it recognizes the inherent sacrifices of all infantrymen, and that, in comparison to all other military occupational specialties, infantrymen face the greatest risk of being wounded or killed in action.

As I understand it, with the advent of airborne assault, qualification in what used to be gliders to earn the airborne qualification is now awarded with that badge. The "jump" wings for paratroops indicates jumpers, not riders (LOL). Although to be fair, a long rappel from a helicopter is no picnic

I was discharged in 1966, did some rappelling from Hueys and once from a Chinook (much more stable). I was young then and saw it all as fun.

As I said, the badge in question wasn't around then.

Hello. The SGT in your photo is NOT Airborne qualified. The silver wings he wears has a helicopter in the center, not a parachute. This indicates he is "Air Assault" qualified. He is trained to leap from helicopters (close to the ground) but not from an aircraft at altitude with a parachute.

eztnus - LOVE your capture!! I have had the chance to watch the ceremony many years ago & it was my favorite of all we saw in DC!! I was so impressed by the whole changing of the Guard!! You might be interested in the book "Sacred Duty" written by Tom Cotton who spent time in the Honor Guard. It's about the beginning up to the present & gave me even more respect for what the do!!

A must see in Washington.

It may have been coincidental or maybe you saw this, but the May issue of the American Legion Magazine had an article about that 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and of the Society of the Honor Guard, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (SHGTUS) which was created in 1999 by US Army Sgt. Maj. Gavin L. McIlvvenna and three other former sentinels. Very interesting reading.
Bud (my Service in the Army was from January 1953 to November 1955) but I never got to Arlington Cemetery until later in my life.)

Eagleholic and WF@B - Thanks to you both on the recommended reading. My first information about the Honor Guard was when I finished up Basic Training in 1958 (Fort Chaffee) and one of my Platoon mates was sent back to Fort Meyers to join the unit. I first attended the changing of the Guard when my father was buried at Arlington. Living nearby now I try to get to Arlington often and take my camera along with me. This was one picture of about 100 that I have of the ceremony. They are some of my favorites.
