Howdy all! We've made a last minute decision to travel to Santa Fe for a week, starting tomorrow. I'll be focusing on bird and animal photography, not architecture or buildings. I've checked these areas online: 1) Galisteo Basin; 2) Davey Audubon Center (Are the trails open? I called them and got voicemail with no open/closed info - website says they're closed); 3) Leonora Curtin Wetlands (doesn't open till 5/1); 4) SF Canyon Preserve. Does anyone have any hints or tips about this area? Any additional areas I should not miss? I SO appreciate your insights! Thank you.

It's not the wildlife photos you're looking for but Canyon Road is well worth a stroll through.
Here is one of my images from Canyon Road.

I don't know if anybody has mentioned it, but there is the Taos Pueblo. It is a community that is a UNESCO site and has been lived in continuously for 1000 years. It's three miles outside Taos. When we were there we it was closed to visitors for the day because of a community event. I believe it was a funeral. Oops....keep it on your list for next time. It is currently closed due to the pandemic.

Just south of town there is an old hacienda that is open to the public. They have people working there - like a living museum. If I remember correctly, it's called Rancho de las Golondrinas. I believe they have a website. Also, if you're driving up from Albq., you might try taking the "back road." The Turquoise Trail offers a drive through old towns and villages that are quite interesting.

You must must must go to the State Capitol. They have an art installation of art completed by New Mexican artists. I loved it. Rather vast. Better than most of the museums in the city.

In Santa Fe or Taos? La Hacienda de los Martinez just outside Taos is more than a "house." It was built as a community defense against Indian attack in the early 1800's. There are multiple rooms for various kinds of work and crafts necessary to keep the community alive, centered around a central courtyard. It is almost more like a fort than a house. Well worth the visit with multiple photo ops from a time long past.

If you're referring to a separate hacienda outside Santa Fe, let us know.

Yes, it is south of Santa Fe. It's a very large complex with several buildings. I planned to spend an hour and was there all afternoon!

One of my favorite spots is the Andrew Smith Gallery downtown. You won't shoot any birds or beasts, but you might see some classic images of same.
