Howdy all! We've made a last minute decision to travel to Santa Fe for a week, starting tomorrow. I'll be focusing on bird and animal photography, not architecture or buildings. I've checked these areas online: 1) Galisteo Basin; 2) Davey Audubon Center (Are the trails open? I called them and got voicemail with no open/closed info - website says they're closed); 3) Leonora Curtin Wetlands (doesn't open till 5/1); 4) SF Canyon Preserve. Does anyone have any hints or tips about this area? Any additional areas I should not miss? I SO appreciate your insights! Thank you.
Have dinner at Geronimo, pricey but worth it. Catch a show at El Meson. Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian, very photogenic morning or late afternoon. Sanctuary at Chimayo. San Fransisco De Assisi Mission - lunch at Old Martina's across the road. Etc., Etc. a favorite destination.

Yup, and neither Church is in Santa Fe either. For photos, lots of good stuff relatively close to Santa Fe. Just takes a rental car. Should have mentioned Bandelier National Monument.

Closed for maintenance - open again April 29 - just going on the basis of past experience.
Last I heard the Audubon was still closed. Galisteo is very dry and not a lot of birds. If you wait till May the Lenora Curtin Wetlands will be open and maybe the Audubon by then.
Very Best !
If you get to Taos, Michael's has the absolutely best omelets. Also, just outside Taos, the Martinez Hacienda is a fantastic photo op. Also, don't miss "the gorge," a deep, well, gorge, dug out by the Rio Grande. The "High Road to Taos" from SF is very scenic. There is also a scenic misson Church in town. Catch it with shadows for the best photos.
