There was some discussion the other day about downloading pdf manuals and getting/not getting a paper manual with the camera. So far, all my cameras have come with a manual, but I know that some don't. This might save the company money, but it can be a nuisance for someone on a shoot who has to look something up. Yes, you might be able to download a pdf to a smartphone, but having the paper in hand might be better.
I recently got a Yamaha receiver, and it comes with a quick setup sheet - no manual. For details about operation, I had to download the pdf manual. So, if I have a question about operation, I have to look it up on the computer or print out all those pages. Not a good situation.

Hi Jerry. You've had quite a few pitch in already but here's my 2-cents.
You're correct of course. But what I'm seeing more and more of is that those who buy say digital cameras don't even know there's a manual in the box. What's more they don't care because "who the hell reads the manual anyway?" One response I receive recently on another forum.
The problem you seem to be referring to, in an abstract sort of way, is that we of our generation, I'm a retired professional coming out of TV and off-line video production photography, cared about being an "expert" with our gear. Today the kids (and I do mean kids in their teens) expect to be "experts" the moment they spend $1,000 on a camera - please, someone give me a break!
Load all my manuals on my portable computer which I always take on my travels. For the short trips print only the items I think I need , which like Jerry I laminate.

Jerry,
I load all my manuals on micro-sd cards which fit my
Motorola Xoom Tablet. Lighter, Faster, Better (searchable).
I own a number of cameras, flashes, etc. and am never without a manual because I always bring my Xoom.
Old school is not always best. I now prefer my Xoom for reading. I have all the various readers installed (Adobe, Kindle, Nook, etc.) and have access to more books and info than I could ever possble want or use.
Can't remember the site right off but you could do a search for printed camera manuals. I got a printed manual, all 180 pages...choice of sizes... for less than %20 with nice cover and binding and quick service. Probably less than all the paper, ink, and time to do it myself.
Kindle now allows downloading personal pdf files, word files, etc. I have some of my stories downloaded that I use for sermons and could probably download camera/Nikon manuals. I have a downloaded Nikon manual. Never had problems downloading any camera or other device manual from Retrevo.com. Some manuals have more information and tips than the manual that's packed with the camera. Also, when I've been on vacation, have camera problems and don't have my manual with me, I can locate access to the internet, go to my account at Retrevo.com where they store the manuals I've downloaded and look at the manual without downloading it.
Hi jerry
I think I may have solved your problem BUY a Ipad and keep all PDF's on it and carry it in your camera bag. LOL

I always like the manual in hand. If I only had the pdf for my camera I would only print a handful of the most important pages.
That's waht I generally do. I print certain pages with setting info. For my DVD, I print a copy of a page or two and keep them handy. I printed six-sided laminated cards for my cameras, and they come in handy.
Nice jerry I do this to..

While not a full-blown substitute for a regular computer, an iPad is also a compact & handy way to handle photos when traveling. Download your photos from your camera. View & do minor editing. Upload to an on-line photo website for your friends to enjoy. Worked great on a recent Paris trip. There's plenty of free wifi. My favorites were cafés. Buy a glass of wine and get their wifi password. Upload photos, Skype home, etc. If you're cheap, stand outside any McDonalds.
i am a newbe and i have to have my book with me to learn my nikon s9100. i took the disk to a local printing company. $15.00 and they put in a 3 ring binder. wish i just had a pocket type book. good day folks
Previous manuals I have had have been very thick because they are printed in different languages. My Canon did not come with a manual so I downloaded a copy off the Internet. I can view it on my EBook reader - but PDF does not display satisfactory. I have contemplated printing the main bits and most Word processors will print even 4 pages to an A4 sheet if required. For now though I have just played with the menu and experimented with all the things I am familiar with and will gradually experiment with the other settings as I get around to it.
I hope no one ever gets me a 'Round Tuit' for a present as I would have so many things to do that I would not know where to start.

Better viewing of PDF files is exactly why I bought my Motorola Xoom. I haven't picked up my Kindle since.
There are apps for all ebook reader formats free or at nominal cost.

I haven't come across the Motorola Xoom - it looks interesting but I notice that there are some 'grey import' versions being sold that are getting bad reviews. I wouldn't purchase a Kindle as they appear to be designed for one purpose - to make lots of money. Mine is a cheapy - less than a quarter of the price of the Kindle but it does the job well and there are hundreds of thousands of free Ebooks on the web and enough to keep me in reading for years.
