An eighty-year-old man looking for what’s possible instead of what’s impossible may be your nomination for stupid, but is my nomination for hero.

Good idea Les. I am 65 and feel your pain. I can still use my D850 and the 200-500 + a 2x teleconverter, but I do it in short bursts. I will take a 2 hour walk and hydrate throughout. I have some permanent injuries that hamper heavy sustained lifting/carrying.

I've been thinking about one of mini cart/chairs for taking snacks, backpack, fluids and be able to sit down and shoot and rest after carting stuff into the park and nearby arroyo.

We were fortunate that the day was not too hot, and there were a couple of benches to rest on now and then. The discomfort was well worth it for my shots.

If by 80 you still can't recognize a really bad idea it is simply not possible for me to hold any sympathy for you.

Been there , done that. To the bottom of my arca swiss plate , the mounting screw for the plate to lens foot, I used a folding head half moon screw. I have a small caribinner clip with the peak design anchor system set-up. Clip it on & attach my camera strap & only carry pick up the weight when shooting.

I have a MOVO vest that I hang the camera on to rest when not shooting. The vest was a great investment.

Good for you! You have spurred me to book a long overdue return stay at the Middleton Plantation Inn which is near Magnolia Gardens Audubon site. At 76 I’ll try my 500 PF but I may just tote my G9 and 50-200 with a 1.4 tele. I’ll put the monopod in the Jeep too.

The rookery is spectacular. Staying at the Inn would be great. We had a camper nearby.

Did not come across to me as humor - just plain nasty, mean, snarky, and totally uncalled for!

I took it as humor. But, I'm always the glass half full type.

I feel your pain (in the neck, the back, the shoulders, etc.). A couple of years ago I went to a similar location in Florida. Took my D500 and Tamron 150-600, plus a monopod fitted with my Nest Gimbal Head. The monopod was at the suggestion of a friend and fellow photographer. I am so thankful to him for the suggestion, and REALLY happy that I took his advice. BTW, his suggestion of a monopod was a response to my question as to whether or not I should take my tripod. The tripod would have been a big mistake.

That is what I thought, unless I had a light weight carbon fiber tripod. My monopod is a carbon fiber with a tilt head. It was a mistake to have left it behind. But, I survived okay and got some nice shots.

This is a photography forum. If someone posts something like the OP, I take it as a little humor and consequently reply in the same theme.
I also gave a winking, smiling, thumbs up emoji. If in any doubt, there is also the option to search my previous posts to determine if I regularly make such remarks.
For a post like mine to be serious, yeah, I would have to be a real first class a-hole. For people to see my post and come to this conclusion as a first thought, that's a really sad indication of where we are today.

I took it as humor. I'm happy with your post and for the posts of those who missed the humor but were concerned as well. All is well in UHH land.

I am in a similar age range with the same equipment. I solved the issue by buying a Nikon 500mmPF. It is more expensive but as good or better and substantially lighter and shorter. I never use the 200 - 500 or a monopod/tripod. It is well worth the cost.

Understood. It's just the cost for me. Having the zoom makes up a bit for the inconvenience of the weight.

If you get a monopod also get the Wimberley MH-100 head. At least this way you stand a good chance for birds in flight.
Also get a monopod that is high enough if you are tall.

I'm okay on the monopod. It just works better if I have it with me. Thanks foe the MH 10 head tip. I'll check it out.

Wow, just WOW! This reply was not necessary, and quite out of order!

Some folks are so full of themselves they wouldn't recognize humor if it jumped up and bit them in the nose. Now that would be really funny to see. for those that can't find it in themselves to laugh.

Folks need to lighten up and look for the positive before jumping at the possibility of things being negative!

When I read this I took my monopod out of the closet and put it on the floor on the passenger side of my car. I thank you in advance for the next time my arms 'don't' get tired.
