I spent about six continuous hours in Magnolia Gardens Audubon site near Charleston today carrying my D500 with my 200-500 Nikon lens, no tripod, shooting BIF and nesting birds in the rookery. I'm 80 years old. I'll take a monopod if I do anything like that again.
Or a Nikon 500mm PF instead...lightweight and easy to shoot handheld.

If by 80 you still can't recognize a really bad idea it is simply not possible for me to hold any sympathy for you.

Wow, just WOW! This reply was not necessary, and quite out of order!
Been there , done that. To the bottom of my arca swiss plate , the mounting screw for the plate to lens foot, I used a folding head half moon screw. I have a small caribinner clip with the peak design anchor system set-up. Clip it on & attach my camera strap & only carry pick up the weight when shooting.

Good for you! You have spurred me to book a long overdue return stay at the Middleton Plantation Inn which is near Magnolia Gardens Audubon site. At 76 I’ll try my 500 PF but I may just tote my G9 and 50-200 with a 1.4 tele. I’ll put the monopod in the Jeep too.

Joking/humor possibly???
Did not come across to me as humor - just plain nasty, mean, snarky, and totally uncalled for!

That was my immediate reaction. If, in fact, the member did mean it as "humor", an apology would be appropriate.

I feel your pain (in the neck, the back, the shoulders, etc.). A couple of years ago I went to a similar location in Florida. Took my D500 and Tamron 150-600, plus a monopod fitted with my Nest Gimbal Head. The monopod was at the suggestion of a friend and fellow photographer. I am so thankful to him for the suggestion, and REALLY happy that I took his advice. BTW, his suggestion of a monopod was a response to my question as to whether or not I should take my tripod. The tripod would have been a big mistake.

This is a photography forum. If someone posts something like the OP, I take it as a little humor and consequently reply in the same theme.
I also gave a winking, smiling, thumbs up emoji. If in any doubt, there is also the option to search my previous posts to determine if I regularly make such remarks.
For a post like mine to be serious, yeah, I would have to be a real first class a-hole. For people to see my post and come to this conclusion as a first thought, that's a really sad indication of where we are today.

When I’m gonna be shooting my D500 with the 200-500 and I’m gonna be aiming at nests for longer periods I use a monopod with the Wimberly monogimbal.

If you get a monopod also get the Wimberley MH-100 head. At least this way you stand a good chance for birds in flight.
Also get a monopod that is high enough if you are tall.

I am 78 and I found the 200-500 and 300 f/2.8 too heavy so I sold them. I instantly regretted the decision and I would not do it again. I would rather suffer or have shorter shooting sessions.
